Playing high bit rate MP3, WMA, or AAC files will get you better sound quality from the sound system. Just copy your favorite musics to an SD card or a compact size USB flash drive, insert the media into the appropriate slot, and enjoy.
For details regarding the supported formats, restrictions, and instructions, consult the owner manual, starting from page 256.
Adjust the audio settings to your personal preference. The strong default mid-bass and surround-sound may or may not meet your expectation.

2018 E300 Luxury - P3 and more
To the best of my knowledge, both the CD/DVD player and Music Register features have been removed from the E300.
I know on the 2015/2016 E, you could only copy from CD to the Music Register, so it makes sense that if they removed the CD player, the Music Register feature would be removed as well.
I'm with ADD0514 on this one -- USB & SD cards have made the Music Register obsolete. By the way, I have a 500GB USB pocket hard drive I use with my car and it works great, much better than the paltry 10GB the old Music Register provided.
