Pano Roof Question

Hi All-

I have a build on order, and have a few questions on the pano roof.

1. how well does the shade block out the sunlight?
2. do you lose head room with the pano roof vs the standard roof?

I know the car looks much better with the option, but i was wondering how practical it is with a 1 year old.
I am hoping the shade does a good job blocking out the sun (1 year old in the back seat), and not lose any headroom.

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The shade nearly completely blocks out the sun at least from what I've seen so far (not had it in height of summer yet). It's thin but it does a decent job. The roof has a heavy tint anyway so that helps.

You do lose a little headroom but I'm 6 foot 4 and have head clearance so unless you're a professional basketball ball player or enjoy permanently wearing hats I'm going to say you'll be fine!

I've heard that squeaks and rattles can be the odd problem.

Mine has been perfect in 30k and in semi polar weather. No problems what so ever.

I live in Jersey, not far from you. We get very hot days in the summer. It's not a shade, just a screen, like you home window screen. To me, it does not work like a shade which blocks out all the light and the heat. We had a few warm days not long ago, I felt the heat came through easily, and that's only in the 80 degree. I had it tinted when I did my window tint. I used 30 tint for the pana which made a real difference blocking out the heat.

We have a Q5 with the pano roof and it is noticeably hotter in the middle of the summer. However, I think with the e-class you should be OK since the MB pano roof is smaller than the Q5.

I do agree with the previous poster the tint will do the trick. Still, I didn't want to chance it with my wagon order and stayed with the standard moonroof. This is in the Houston, TX area.

Thanks all. I was thinking swapping out the pano roof for the air body control, since they are somewhat in the same price range. Granted 2 different options. Oddly enough I had the pano roof in my w212 but it's been so long I don't really recall what it was like. I do remember loving the look, but not sure about the functionality

My reply was in reference to the thread starter. I suggest he should not consider pano roof due to hot summer in NY. Since mine was not ordered, I did not have a choice except tint. I agree as for you in Houston, pano roof is out of the question! I have been to Houston, it's hot and humid for over 6 months out of the year!

I have the pano on my E300. The shade/screen works fine to block out the sun and the heat. I have timed windows on mine because I am in Florida where its hot 24/7 and it does a decent job keeping the sun out. I am 6'5 and I have plenty of headroom in the front (not sure about the back because I am never back there).

The reason why I decided on the pano is because it looks WAY better than the standard sunroof but mainly because the shade didn't have any openings in it (it is a solid shade/screen compared to the standard sunroof that has "vents" or "slats" in it). With the standard sunroof I noticed that the shade has like a few "vents" in it where the sun can shine through and when the sun was at the right spot, it would be in my eyes and I wouldn't have any way to control that because of the vents in the standard sunroof's shade.

I really suggest keeping the pano on your build because it makes the car look that much better and it'll stand out from the other E classes on the road.

If you ordered the Sport model and ride comfort is a key factor then you probably want air body control.

I'm definitely interested in the results. I drove one without before ordering and then ordered ABC but it was months between so I can't compare. Pick a bumpy road!

P.S. - Spring for Package 3 (just $3,500 more) and you get all the Drive Pilot toys. That's why I bought the car! If you do much highway driving (I don't) they are pretty amazing.

Thanks! i will fill you in as soon as i get around to test driving the car. I would spring for the P3, but living in NYC, I didnt see much need for it. I would have done a 2017 P3, but unfortunately i need to burn off the payments on my ML350

I drive a 2015 S550. I absolutely HATE the frigging Panorama Roof, but some idiot at the factory decided to make it standard on the W222. Mine "creaks" whenever I enter a parking lot apron. It creaks many times when I go into reverse. Of course, nobody ever plans on "rolling" their car, but rollovers do happen. In such a case, do you want thousands of glass particles exploding into the car from the roof? If I were you, I would pass on this option and be thankful that MB still gives W213 buyers the option of doing so.

Mercedes safest models (Guard series) don't offer any kind of roof opening.

If it creaks there is something wrong and it should be adressed accordingly, we have not seen any creaking issues in the W205 or W213 panos
As long as it is correctly serviced and lubed using the ridiculously expensive special lubricant you should have no issues.

And no, a pano roof is no safety hazard, choose it if you want it, they look good and give that really nice lux interior feel.
