Remote Park Pilot

Does anyone know if Mercedes is planning to bring the Remote Parking Pilot feature to the 2017 E Class in the United States? This is feature is currently available in Europe and it allows you to park your E Class while standing outside your vehicle, using an app on your smartphone. If I understand correctly, this feature will be introduced in the US with the 2018 S Class. I'm really hoping Mercedes will offer an update that will activate this feature for existing E Class owners.

Keyless go is standard on all US models. Even if this is later approved for US bound vehicles, I doubt they will retroactively add this to existing models.

I would suspect that's more a DOT approval issue rather than a marketing / sales issue

I think BMW is already selling this feature in the US on their new cars.

BMW does offer it as an option on there 2018 7 Series cars here in the U.S.

And Telsa has offered it here for a couple years now.

So it can't be a DOT approval issue...even though that is what I was told when they delivered my car. Maybe a MB corporate liability concern?

I want to remember reading it was due to a limiting factor on the Verison network.

Not exactly. Keyless Start is standard, but Keyless Go is part of the P01 package.

Just to clarify: I have the Premium 3 Package, so my car already has Parking Pilot. There is a button on the center console that you push and the car will actively search for a parking space (both parallel and perpendicular). Once you select the parking spot you want, the car takes over - it actually steers, brakes, pulls forward and shifts into reverse (if necessary) completely hands-free. That being said, I would think that Remote Parking Pilot would utilize the same system and no additional hardware is required - perhaps a simple software update to "unlock and activate" this feature?

Right. It works in the EU but not in the US. MB says they will "unlock" this feature in the US once they receive "regulatory approval."

An interesting feature but I still haven't figured out why one would want to park their car while standing outside of it...

You must not live in a crowde city. In places like NY, Chicago and LA or Europe the spots can be so narrow its very hard to get out without banging the guy next to you. The parking feature makes that effortless.

Park Pilot is not the same as Parking Pilot.
Park Pilot works remotely from a smart phone from outside the vehicle.
Parking Pilot works from inside the vehicle only.

I've actually lived in NY...but if the spot is that narrow...I'm more worried about the "other" guy banging my door...I'm sure some folks find it useful though.

Yeah, the only practical reason is if the garage or parking space is too tight to exit the vehicle once it is parked....a rare occurrence. For the most part this feature is just a good party trick.

It also says it will be available in a later model year.

Remote Parking Pilot: For the first time, this system allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to get into and out of the car easily, even if space is very tight. Remote Parking Pilot will be available in the US in a later model year.

Mercedes me for the US limitation

The feature is in the car. The limitation is the APP. Mercedes Me for the US is not including this option. If you found the way to download the Mercedes Me app from a European App store, you would have this option available and usable.

Downloading the app is not enough. I have the app, but it will not install in a device with a US sim. A message is displayed "Cannot install on a device in your country." Unfortunately, I discarded my EU micro sims when I bought a new phone that uses a nano sim.

Here is a Google Play link to the app. Will someone in the US with an EU sim try to install the app?

Agreed. I had that feature on my w213 before I swapped it for the Coupe. Tried it once then never used it again.

If you’re parking that close to another car you are going to risk other issues...

My favorite parking spot in a public garage is an end spot tight against a cement wall as far away from another car as possible. That way I don't get door dings on the exposed side. Parking spaces are quite narrow in high density garages such as at a seaport.

Have you actually try this with the european app in the US model? Does it work?

I used it in a friend's car on a trip to the Baltic last year. I wish it would be released in the US.
