Wireless Charging Support for iPhone 8, Plus and X

Good news!

Apple’s support document identifies the manufactures that will have compatible Qi chargers in their cars. Mercedes Benz made the list. Check out the link to see the others.

Excellent timing! Just this morning I was looking into whether or not to order the iPhone X, and MB charging in my E43 is a big part of that decision. Glad that MB planned for the future with this feature. Wish that Apple was similarly forward thinking and had included wireless charging in their past models.

Yeah Mercedes planned for the future well, except they didn't plan on future phone sizes. I plan on getting the iPhone X probably around the end of the year or early next year so I can try to get a discount on it. Supply will be extremely low come launch day because of production issues. (I follow everything apple along with Mercedes)

Those big ones are phablets that are more than 6" high. They're too big to be called a phone. The new iPhone is just under the wire at 5.8" h while what it replaces is 6.24" h. The charging pad will comfortably hold a 6" x 3.5" device. I've been using a charging pad with my Galaxy S6 for 2 1/2 years. It is a great feature. You Apple guys will love it.

The screen size is 5.8 but the height is less than the iPhone 8 Plus. Its 5.65 inches tall. I love having a big phone compared to a small one because I use it a lot. If I remember correctly, Mercedes advertised that its supposed to hold a phone up to a 5.5 inch screen. Like I don't think it will hold a Galaxy S8 or Note 5.

I didn't measure the screen size. I measured the physical height and width. That's what counts when using a charging pad.

Thats true. But I do remember Mercedes or some review was advertising that it would fit a 5.5 inch phone. This was back in like Summer 2016 when the car was just released.

Modifying the charging pad?

Has anyone seen a way to modify the charging area so that slightly larger phones can fit?

That area is molded plastic with imbedded USB connections. You'd have to destroy it to fit a larger device.

You would be better off buying a separate charging pad or puck and setting it up in the cupholders or center console. They also make phone mounts for cars that have wireless charging built in. But those are bulky and pretty pricey for a mount. Hopefully now that the iphone has finally gotten on board with wireless charging, more innovative accessories will come out.

This article just came out yesterday, seems iPhone X will have some problem with E class wireless charging.

I already posted about that in another thread. Based on people's experiences here so far, I'm not 100% sure that this article is accurate. I'll know later today when I pick mine up.
