Question - Exhaust Noises
Good morning everyone. I am new to the site and new to Mercedes Benz. I have a 2017 Selenite Gray Metallic Luxury E300/ P2 with Black interior.
I have a question about the exhaust. First the engine on this car is LOUD!! I have never owned a new car like this one where standing outside of the vehcicle it is SOOO LOUD!! lol. Something I was not at all expecting from a Mercedes.
The exhaust on mine makes this high pitched sputtering noise from the left tailpipe ONLY......for some reason it doesn't make the noise at all from the right tailpipe. It sounds like a high pitch noise like the sound a person makes when sputtering their lips if that makes any sense at all.....sorry it I am not explaining it properly.
I have actually had clients ride with me and comment on how terrible the brand new car sounds and it is a bit embarassing I have to say.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone else have a new E that makes this sputtering sound from the left tailpipe while in park and idling?? I had the dealer here in Plano look at it and they said it ws normal and that basically I was crazy. I just find it hard to believe that a car this expensive and is a Mercedes...sounds this terrible. Any help is greatly appreciated. I did try to search for this issue in the forum so if I overlooked it and this post is a duplicate thread I apologize.
Thank you,
Brandon

You may not actually have an exhaust on the right side; some models have the decorative exhaust tip both sides but only have an actual exhaust on one side (typically left side). That would explain assymetrical sound!
In terms of the odd sound, go listen to another one at the dealer or open your window next time you're alongside one. Gives you something to baseline against and determine if yours is odd/wrong or just the model overall is louder than you think is right.

I think the engine sound is one of the few disappointments of the new generation E Class. At best, it sounds like a pretty quiet diesel engine, at worst it sounds like a cheap economy car. A direct injected, turbocharged 4 cylinder car is never going to sound like an AMG V8, but this is an area for improvement. Overall, a fantastic car in terms of looks, comfort, safety and quality - but I do think that longer term, the engine sound of the 2.0L engine will need to be further optimized.
