Resolution to iPhone 8/X Wireless Charging & Apple Pay (US/Canada)
Hi Everyone,
Making a new thread so this is visible. I found how to eliminate the issue with Apple Pay while still using the wireless charging and being able to use Apple Pay elsewhere.
The solution is to go into your settings in Comand and turn off the NFC feature. Navigate to:

Nonetheless, I have to wonder what other changes would result from unchecking that option. "NFC" stands for Near Filed Communication and, according to Tech Advisor, "has three modes of operation: the peer-to-peer mode that lets two smartphones swap data, a read/write mode in which one active device picks up info from a passive one, and card emulation, in which an NFC device such as a smartphone can be used like a contactless credit card." If the car's NFC is turned off, can the car still communicate with the phone to make calls, get contact info, etc. etc.?
I solved the problem in a different way — I disable Apple Pay on my iPhone X as I have no desire to use it, and have deleted all credit cards from the phone for security reasons.

I got the X yesterday and I noticed when I charge it wirelessly in my E, it does not activate Apple Pay. I did not set it up to begin with but it did not pop up with the Apple Pay set up stuff.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt. I noticed if you just quickly drop the phone in there and get your hands away, it will not activate apple pay. But if you do it slowly and hover your phone around the area too long, then it will

The NFC transmitter in the US is in the cupholder compartment lid itself (there's a small NFC icon next to the latch) so it would often come up when you put your phone in if it got too close to the transmitter. You're able to turn it off in 2018 US models and then the problem doesn't come up.

If the phone is on the wireless mat it also improves (boosts) signal quality through the cars antenna - even if it is not plugged in. So it does have some benefit?

Thanks — should have realized that from the ordinal post. However, I checked my 2018 E400 Coup and the "uncheck NFC surface area" is no longer included, or at least I can't find it anywhere in the Command/System menu.

It's exactly the same in my 2019 E450.
