I plan to install a HP dash cam in my W213 when it arrives but I have reservations about letting a stranger route the wiring to power the cam. As a potential alternative, I am considering routing a cable from the cam, down the side of the windscreen and around/beneath the dash down to the 12V supply. I had done this in my current car and it looks totally fine - not at all noticable. However, I suspect the W213 might need ultra thin wiring. What I would like to ask is:
- Has anyone tried this with success
- how long a wire will I need ( I am guesing 10ft should be fine as that's what my existing car requires)
- Where can I get ultra thin micro-usb cable, with just two wires for +/-. I do not need wires for data.
- Any better approaches to do this ?
I know getting a "pro" to install it would give the best results but the thought of some stranger tinkering with my new car gives me the shivers and i'd rather avoid it.
it's very easy to route a cable via the outside, underneath the body to the engine bay. cable does not even have to be "ultra" thin.
(I use to have this setup)
however you can also piggy-back it on the cigarette fuse in the trunk. - I have 2 cameras (wel actually 4, cos 2x dual)
hooked on 2 cellink PRO batteries, which in turn are piggy-backed on 2 fuses.
It's really very simple to do as long as the camera comes with a hardwire cable .
if it doesn't, get one of these for easy installation (even if you don't want parkmode) https://www.blackvue.com/power-magic-pro/
(shop around: it should not cost more than 28 eur)

I take the wire to the 12 volt suppy in the back seat.

I did the same thing but I hardwire it to the back of the lighter. You can remove the the lighter tray and lift the rear of the center console-- just (2) T20 torx and (2) 10 MM. And you can remove the A pillar by popping the airbag cap and remove the (1) T20 torx.
I have a similar setup however my dash cam is hardwired using the fuse box in the passenger foot well. My Cellink B is located in my glove compartment...

Hey guys, I just bought a C43 but I am posting here because this thread is relatively new. Trying to hard wire my dash cam. Is there a fuse in MB that gets 12V on as soon as doors are unlocked (engine not necessarily on) and stays on a couple of minutes after car is locked? My old 228i USB was like that. I tried cigarette lighter but it only comes on when engine is on; same as USB.

Please post in either the C43AMG forum or the W205 forum where you should receive appropriate answers.
Also, searching there first should point you in a direction you could try.
I was searching for a similar setup to wire my Escort Smart Cord. Didn't want to power off the mirror as I live in VA where I need it to be stealth. Is there a fuse box in the cabin, or only engine bay or trunk?

If you want it to power off with the car ignition- Trunk fuse is your only option.
If you have the radar set on auto off after 1hr as an example then you can connect it to the fuse box in the passenger foot well and the radar will have constant power. And will shutdown after 1hr for example based on your radar detector settings.
