Fuel economy for 2018 E300?
Greetings everyone. I took my wife's GL in for service and was given an E300 as a loaner. I think it's a 2018. First of all, turbo or not, I can't believe this is a 4 cylinder. Very impressive. I normally drive a 2012 E550 cab with a twin turbo V8, so I am used to some HP. The other thing that impresses me is that after my 20 mile drive to work I am showing over 40mpg. The EPA estimate for this car is around 30 mpg highway. I am wondering what the real world mpg is for mixed driving (not putting your foot in it constantly). By real world, I mean calculating by hand. I appreciate any comments.

My car is used exclusively for town driving. It is rarely out of 5th gear (<35 mph). I consistently get about 18 mpg. I'm a very conservative driver with slow starts/stops. I have a much more powerful BMW for highway driving.

By hand calculation I’m at 29 since buying mine a few months ago. I regularly get bursts on the highway at 70 mph where the indicator shows over 35 mpg avg. I have a 390 hp V8 truck, a 296 hp Soorts coupe, and a 300 hp SUV. I never feel like I’m struggling in any way in my E300. Very satisfied with the performance.

I regularly get in the low 30’s in my 2017 E300. Contrary to some reviews I find it very peppy with more than adequate acceleration. I’m impressed with the engine and transmission. Wish I could say the same about the navigation and other electronics.

Mostly driving what I would characterize as county roads rather than freeway or expressway, nor stop and go city, I get a steady 25 mpg average. It's a definite improvement over my former W212. 25 miles west is elevation 220', 25 miles east is 4000'...not exactly mileage friendly.

Thanks for the replies. After driving the car another 30 miles or so later in the day when I originally posted, the average (shown on the dash) dropped to about 33.5 mpg. Still pretty impressive.

My 2017 E300 is averaging 27 mpg doing a 60/40 mix of city/highway with a total of 23K miles so far.
Did a long highway drive last week and got 34 mpg. Amazing! Love this 4-cyl turbo charged engine.
Plenty of pep.

Great gas mileage on 2017 long distance driving
Drove to Baltimore Inner Harbor from New Jersey and got 34.5 miles to the gallon. Traffic going was great but returning was not so good. Total for both trips was 31.7 with a total of 411 miles and 155 to empty. That’s an unbelievable 566 miles for the tank of gas on Premium grade gas. The car drove itself 99% of the time in both directions so that could also contribute to it. Most of the driving was in Echo mode with a little Comfort because I forgot to change it

I just did a 420 round trip from New Jersey to Baltimore and achieved 34.5 on the way down and 31.7 for the total trip because of lots of stop and go traffic on the return trip. This was achieved by having the car drive itself 99% of the time with speed limit assist set to 5 MPH max over speed limit. For the full tank I achieved 531 miles @ 30.1 with mostly stop and go traffic between 420-531 miles. I think that was pretty awesome. Most of my general comment on a daily basis is stop and go so averaging mid to high 20s

For purposes of thread, I have gotten 28.3 mpg over my first 31k miles.

Sorry for any misunderstanding, 5MPH over has to be done manually each time the speed limit charges. The limit warning I have set to 1MPH over

2017 E300
I exclusively use Chevron Premium 91 octane. Mind you that 39 mpg was over the course of a 70 mile trip, first 7 miles were city driving, and the rest was open road, which though had some elevation changes, was mostly flat for the last 20 miles. eco mode, driving around 70-75mph.

Probably from one of the major manufacturers (refiners). Any of the "Name Brands" would be top tier. Gasoline supply is determined by refineries, pipelines and supply depots. In some areas, the Shell Premium you buy may actually come from a Valero tank farm, simply because there is no Shell refinery or pipeline capable of supplying product to the depot from which the delivery trucks supply your favorite Shell station. Most of the major oil companies have "exchange agreements". It doesn't really matter anymore. Gasoline manufacturers are now supposed to demonstrate that their fuel meets certain standards of keeping the engine clean. They can then be called "top tier".

Top tier fuel is superior to fuel that just meets legal standards. There is a significant difference between "standard" fuels and top tier fuels.

Now days the additives (which may include odor and color as well as detergent) may help slightly, but the minimum standard is set without them. Fuels are much more uniform than in the past. There will always be disagreement about which brand is best. Buy what you prefer, but feel confident that any "top tier" is accepted by auto makers. AFAIK all the major brands qualify.

I've been a victim of "standard" fuels that have a minimum amount of detergent. A single cross country and return trip (6,300 miles) in a new GMC Jimmy was enough to foul the intake system. On that trip I used the cheapest fuel I could find - typically unbranded fuel at discount outlets. When I returned the engine was running very rough. A dealer serviced the engine and reported that the valves were covered with deposits, etc. The bottom line was that my new Jimmy got new valves and the intake and exhaust system was thoroughly cleaned. The dealer recommended top tier fuel. On a subsequent trip there were no problems. I've been using top tier fuel ever since.
