Well they also change it when you just bring it in for warranty work so in that sense it would be free. But yeah, otherwise you're paying the service charge to change the battery. I get a 10 pack on eBay for around $5 so that's way cheaper than any Service A/B at the dealer.

You can reduce battery usage by double clicking the locking button a red light will flash a couple of times to confirm it is in reduced function mode. The key now no longer transmits a signal thereby saving power. As soon as you press the unlock key it is fully functional again.
for those whose car is parked outside and not in a garage it is also a useful security function as it means it is not possible to intercept the key signal and then transmit to the car to steal it. There have been cases of theft in this way in th UK.
I found my c class battery lasted about a year.

My FOB battery once went dead without any warning message beforehand. I went back into the house to get the spare FOB, and it was also dead, even though it had almost no use.

Does that mean that I can put my spare FOB in reduced function mode for extended periods of non-use?

OK so I would like to know...
I am the only one who drives my 2016 E350. I can click the "spare" key twice and then store it in a drawer so it won't discharge. Or is it as you describe and turns itself off when in the drawer?
The fob uses a CR2025 battery. Problem is that these are special CR2025 batteries sprinkled with Benz Dust, and are available ONLY at the MB dealer for $12.50. (just kidding)

I tested my second FOB today, which I basically never use, and sure enough it was dead from doing nothing. I will use this deactivate feature after I replace the battery.

The lithium coin cells are technically rechargable. My guess is they say no to sell more bats, and if you do it wrong itll end badly. My 2016 takes a 2025 battery so i modded it to take a 2032. The car complains when it gets to ~3.06v, which is easy when some dont have much more than that when you gettem. So I top them off to ~3.4 and they last much longer, then top again when low.
So having a factory wireless charger is totally possible, but the key has be able to take it. If you wanted you could measure the batt voltage, the let it sit for a while in the mystery charge spot, the measure again. Id start with a nearly dead batt or it may not charge it even if it can.
I also want to recharge my TPMS batts, since its about that time, just gotta weigh the hassle vs cost n hassle of new. Probably not worth it but we'll see. Having those recharge wirelessly would be awesome!

BTW, I use the 2025 batteries for the lights in our theater room so I keep several around in any event.
