2018 E400 4matic Wagon
I have a 2018 E400 wagon and this car does indeed have one battery, located in the engine compartment on the passenger side. The battery is not visible. It is under the pollen filter. If you're planning on buying a new battery, I would suggest you buy an absorbed glass mat ("AGM") battery. Check the warranty on the new battery. In terms of size, the seller should be able to state which battery fits.

I just had the battery in my S213 All-Terrain replaced. It is an easy operation that doesn't require elaborated skills or special tools. However, I was warned by my mechanic that the new battery has to be trained. As I didn't want to evoke any electrical issues I had it replaced in the workshop. I chose a Bosch AGM 95 Ah (# 0 092 S5A 130) as it cost only 140 EUR. Most probably any AGM battery with sufficient capacity (> 80 Ah) will fit.

Couple of points:
  • When you change the inside filter I believe you must work on your back. Setting the seat all the way back will give you more room.
  • The filter in the engine compartment is easy and straight forward. The inside one not so much.
  • Only the Germans could engineer changing a pollen filter, which is routine maintenance, in such a ridiculous manner. For example on my Ford, (made in the USA) the filter in the glove compartment takes less then 2 minutes to replace. Easy as 1,2 , 3.
Whoever engineered the replacement of the inside filter and anyone who approved it should be fired!
