Head-Up or Not?

I'll likely be placing an order for a 2019 E450, pretty loaded this weekend. I wasn't planning to add the Head-Up Display. I've never had, so I likely wouldn't really miss it. But my next door neighbor has it in his MBW and he commented he'd never own a car without it. For those of you who do have Head-Up Display, please let me know if it was worth the cost or if it is something you would or wouldn't buy again.

Thanks,

Thanks. I will likely include it in the order, but I also see it's limited availability. If they tell me it will hold up the build of my car, I'll remove it.

I like it. My 22 year old daughter loves it. My wife hates it. But she just turns it off.

Thanks. I live in Florida, which means during the day most of the year, I'll be wearing prescription polarized sunglasses. Can you see the display when you wear sunglasses?

In 2018 cars HUD came bundled with the P3 package I got for other reasons. I'm mostly leaving it on while driving because having an easy to read mph indication is helpful in zones with traffic cameras. Navi projections are also very good, and when steering assist is active, the display warns you if you drift out of the lane. Also, compass direction is projected when Navi is off. All of these functions can be served by other means, but HUD makes accessing the information easier, and I don't regard it as overkill luxury. I'd probably spring for it again, now that its unbundled.

Thanks. For 2019, MB simplified the option packages on the E Class and the HUD is now a standalone option. There is only one Premium Package and then there's a Convenience Package, which is sort of PO1-Light and then the Lighting Package. Next are all the driver assistance packages.

Wearing polarised sunglasses diminishes the visibility quite badly (I wear prescription polarised sunglasses). Same goes with BMW HUD. I still would not be without it though. I set the dash display to show your speed digitally to compensate.

I wear prescription polarized glasses and quite often I'm unable to see it. But on the occasions where I'm not I find it quite useful. It was bundled as part of the P3 package so I'm not sure I would have selected it if I was ordering it, but now having had it, I do enjoy it. YMMV.

I find it of very little use because ANY polarized sunglasses (not just prescription) render it almost invisible. I keep mine turned off as it's just a distraction.

So I just drove my neighbors car around the corner with HUD, wearing my sunglasses. I couldn't see the HUD with my glasses on. This would make HUD a night option for me and TBH, for $990 isn't worth the price of admission.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I've lived without HUD all these years and will pass on this feature for my new build.

EDIT: I will be at my MB dealer to make a final decision. I'll ask to see one with HUD and see if the MB system works better with sunglasses than my neighbors BMW.

I was concerned about certain options that I wanted that were marked as being of limited availability in the DOG. The sales manager explained that I wasn’t to worry because I was special ordering a car. The limited availability was in the DOG for cars being ordered by the dealership for their stock. My order was put in on July 06 it’s in production now. YAY!!!!!

That's exciting to know your car is in production now! There's nothing like that call from your sales guy telling you the car arrived at the dealer and they want to schedule your deliver!

I can’t wait. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning.
I did order the HUD. I don’t think my old Ray Ban Aviators are polarized.

In place of the HUD, I'm going to get 19" wheels that I know I'll like the look of. My prescription glasses are definitely highly polarized, so that would make HUD not a great option for me, living in the land of perpetual sunshine.

EQE 500 4MATIC replacing EQC 4matic AMG line P
Just to add to the conversation I am used to the HUD iteration in the c class. I liked it a lot enough that I consider it an essential.
On the test drive of the e it was clear the HUD iteration is improved.
Currently due to build delays for european e class arising from the new certification regime i am driving a loaner c class (free of charge so no complaints) without HUD and i really miss it. I keep the onboard computer showing the speed as the speedo graduation is too tight for accurate reading. Usually I have the fuel consumption showing and km speed in the HUD.
I wear reactolite prescription glasses ie they darken and lighten according to light levels and these are not polarised so cause no issues.
I do think HUD are a very good idea as you do keep your attention on the road and not on the dials.

We have it in our 2018 E400 Convertible, and I love it. I don't think I could do without it. At first, I thought it was a gimmick, but at night when using the Navigation system, it displays it. And during the day, it has great optics as well. It's awesome in my opinion. I just ordered it in my 2019 E450 4 Matic. So far, the option is still on the order sheet for production for July 30th.

Depending on the glare level, you will be able to see the data reflected. I also live in South Florida all year round.

Thanks again to those who replied. I'll see it in action tomorrow and make a final decision, but at the moment, the upgrade in wheels may be the last upgrade I can manage to get past the partner. I'm getting this thing loaded into near S class territory!

I've had HUD in various cars for more than a decade. I won't have a car without it. The feature I like the most in the E300 it shows the proper lane to be in while navigating.

New cars should have modern technology. I would never buy a brand new E-class without distronic, HUD and more..
