That video is somewhat amusing. The guy really doesn't have a clue what he's talking about for the most part. He's wrong about the engine. The E400 and E450 are really the same engine, but the E450 has been tuned to have 32 more HP. The E43 AMG is 396HP (0 - 60 in 4.5 seconds as opposed to 0 - 60 5 seconds in the E450)

Ya, thats kinda what I thought about the guy when he started talking about the engine. Looks like they cut it there and stopped filming and then he changed the subject quickly because he didn't know what he was talking about, lol. I agree though, just different tunes. I wonder though if the E43 simply has a higher performing tune than the E450 and that is the reason for the increased output to 396 hp. I wonder if a tuner meant to go on the E43 AMG would work on the E450. You look at the specs on the tuners and they say 2017 and up. If this is the case and the E450 was tuned with the aftermarket tune you could see nearly 450 hp with the E450. They do list this motor in the E43 AMG on this OE tuning page as being 362 HP, must be the same motor?http://www.oetuning.com/mercedes-benz-c43-amg

I had the opportunity to drive the 2017 and 2018 E43's and I can tell you the cars felt very heavy and ponderous to drive. Not really impressed. Even the salesperson agreed. And those 20" wheels felt like I was driving a small truck in terms of smoothness. Right now one of our local dealers still has about 3 or 4 2018 E43's in stock. Lastly, I think they are way over priced as well.

If memory serves the E43 uses the same engine (400/450) with larger turbos and AMG tune.

FYI: From the Mercedes web sit: HP and Torque for the i6 48 volt engine in the CLS:
  • 3.0L inline-6 turbocharged engine with integrated starter-generator
  • 362 + 21 hp and 369 + 184 lb-ft of torque*

That would be a total of 383 hp and 553 lb-ft of Torque: This makes the CLS on hell of "stump puller": coming out the hole with that amount of torque this baby's 0-60 times will approach the Tesla!

You are correct. A true AMG engine is signed by the MB person who builds the engine. I don't believe the E43 is a true AMG engine in that regard, but is tuned to higher HP. To me, the value of diminishing returns is in full play here. The E400 we have with 329HP is more than enough power for the car. I'll be interested to see if I can even tell a difference when I get my E450 with 362HP. We are after all speaking of fractions of seconds in 0 - 60 times. .

I remember, with vast fondness, my first ever E320 Sedan I purchased in 1995. It was the first of more MB cars than I can count at this point. But it was built like a tank. And I can still hear (in my mind) that sublime sound of the door closing. The "thunk" was such a unique and solid sound. Ah, memories. But my point in all this was the engine. It had a 3.2L I-6 217 HP 229.0 ft.lbs. of torque and I couldn't imagine ever needing or wanting more power. That engine was simply amazing and the acceleration was strong and gave you such a sense of confidence.

I think you're misinterpreting the HP on the I6 engine. All that power is not available at the same time. The 21HP available from the 48v system is not added to the 362 from the engine. the 21HP is supplemental for things like eco start/stop, which makes the engine shudder a thing of the past.

It should still be considered a 362HP engine with a little help: Here's more about the CLS engine for 2019:

Under the slinky hood is the first application of Mercedes-Benz's new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. It will be the only engine available at launch, and it makes 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Sadly, Mercedes hasn't brought back a logical naming scheme based on power or displacement, as the introductory six-cylinder model is called CLS450. The straight-six also has a combination starter and generator hooked up to a 48-volt electrical system. The motor produces 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and, just like many other 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, it's there to improve fuel efficiency. It can provide assistance with acceleration from a stop, as well as allow for engine-off coasting at times. This powertrain is coupled to a nine-speed automatic and can propel the CLS to a top speed of 130 mph, though 0-to-60 time and fuel economy ratings have yet to be released. Both rear-drive and all-wheel-drive models will be available, and all versions have multi-link independent suspension at all corners with optional air suspension.

Dear RBRYLAW:

I believe the 48 volt system does in fact kick in when you accelerate: It is not just to run the AC and other items when you are cruising.

This is even confirmed by the article you quoted from:

"It can provide assistance with acceleration from a stop, as well as allow for engine-off coasting at times."

When coasting or cruising the 48 volt system will run many parts of the electrical system thereby increasing the mpg and range of the car.

When you go and investigate the new i4 48 volt engine that was originally and then cancelled for the 2019 E350 and now slated for the 2020 E350, the HP and torque were both above 300.

The 0-6 times were projected to be 5.6 seconds - almost as fast as the E400.

I know this for a fact as I was ordering the car, only to be told it would not come out this year. (that is why I went to the E450)

The E350 basically made the E400 obsolute: 0-60 within .4 seconds, but 20% better fuel economy.

Remember the E300 with 242 HP is much slower at 6.2 seconds.

So the answer to the question of whether or not the hp and torque from the 48 volt lithium ion batter is available with the power from the i4 and/or i6 engine: Emphatically YES!

Here is link that better describes the i4 engine:

But, it's NOT as you suggest a Tesla fighter with I believe you said a 383 HP engine with 553 ft lb of torque. That's not it at all.

Thanks, but I doubt tomorrow will be take delivery day. The car has to go through PDI (dealer speak with Pre-Delivery Inspection), the windows tinted with Nano film and the dealers version of Ceramic Coating inside and out. Tuesday is way more likely for me.
