I personally wouldn't take the chance, but I wouldn't take the chance on a new BMW model with a new power-train either. It's not specific to MB. It's best to give it a year or two.

Thanks...I'll have to check that out. As a back-up, I'm cross shopping a loaded 2019 BMW 540i M Sport. That i6 engine design has been in production for almost a decade now and pretty well vetted. Its almost 100hp short of the E53 AMG, has no air suspension, but is almost $10K cheaper. Still, the E Class AMG is just so enticing.

Yeah, but BMW under-rates these engines... The 540i has a very comfortable ride with the DDC or DHP, so I wouldn't worry about the lack of air suspension. One advantage that the E53 has is the availability of the acoustic package which BMW doesn't offer. By the way, you can get an M550i for the price of the E53, and the M550i is much more powerful, of course.

But what was MBW thinking with the styling of the 550i? It just doesn't speak to me aesthetically at all.

I keep on reading your typically critical comments, little of which seems to be based on actual owners experience. I am not aware of any issue with the E63s that would be pervasive which has been quite solid, at least nothing compared to the new M5... Do you actually drive a Mercedes?
