CD Player

This is mostly curiosity as I probably would not purchase a new E Class due to the front end appearance.
However, I got an email with a link to the MBUSA accessories catalog. One item was a CD player to be installed in the glove box of E and S class. So, I assume this means an installed CD player is not available?
Yes, I know many people do not use CD's anymore, but there are millions in US who must. Why else would there be so many for sale. Not to mention the many millions of CD's that are already out there.

That is correct. The E and S class do not include a CD player. Instead, you can load hundreds of GB of music to memory stick and download to the hard drive in your car. I personally can't remember the last time I played a CD in any of my cars, even when they had a player.

What bothers you about the front end? and is the sport and luxury both bothering you? just very curious

It actually almost swayed me away that I couldn't get a CD player but I am sucking it up (I guess) and going to try to adapt. Do you all feel like the digital music sounds as good? Usually, they say CDs are better quality sound.

Personally I believe CD's sound better, but then you are riding around in a car so not sure it makes a difference. In fact, I downloaded over 1,000 songs from CD's into my 2010 E350's hard drive. Would like to be able to do that in the future.
I do download CD's through computers into a USB for my wife to play in her Nissan Rogue. She finds it more convenient than the single CD player. Recording from a CD through a computer to a USB and then to the hard drive in the car sounds like a lot of "stepping on" as they used to say. Each recording will degrade the music to some extent.

As for the appearance, tried to find a picture of a 2010 E350, Luxury version. Attached a picture of 2011 Sport version. Luxury has one more bar in the grille. My basic problem with the new E is the grille and the huge intakes on either side of the lower grille. To me, just does not have that luxury sedan look.

CD's are about as extinct as cassette tape. If you have legacy CD's the best thing to do is copy them to either a memory stick or an SD card. One can put a lot of music and/or videos on a 1 TB SD card. It may have to be partitioned to work in the E Class. I don't know what the storage limits are.

It took some digging, but it appears you can save up to 2 Terabytes of data in an E Class. Given the average size of a music CD is 75mb, and there are 1,000,000 MB in a Terabyte one could easily store several thousand CDs in the Media storage.

There is an SD slot in the console along with multiple USB ports. Simply insert your device into a matching port. There is a media menu in the entertainment system where you can select the device you wish to use (similar to selection a radio station).

UA beat me to it. It's actually very easy to do. Simply transfer music from your Laptop/PC to SD card, put the SD card in the SD card slot and the car will walk you through downloading the music to Media. Easy Peasy!

I don't download anything. The system plays directly from the SD card or memory stick. The W213 entertainment system does not have any internal media storage.

I'll have to check later, but even my C300 let me download music directly to the media storage system. I saved loads of CDs directly to the cars internal storage. I believe the E Class does as well.

Since I haven't tried to download music, here's what the owners manual says:

Permissible data storage medium:
R SD card
R USB storage device
R iPod®/iPhone®
R MTP devices
R Bluetooth® audio equipment
% R The multimedia system supports a total
of up to 50,000 files.
R Data storage media up to 2 TB are supported
(32-bit address space).

I interpret that to mean it can store music, but then I could also be wrong?

The 2 TB data storage media is the size limit of a usb storage device.

Thanks. I still have to wonder if I could store music to the Media system in a C Class if one can't do the same in the E Class?

Not so. Digital files that are repeatedly re-recorded onto solid state media are the same as the source file, no degradation in quality at all.

Have no idea. Doubt it. There is some kind of connection for a cable in the glove box, but did not come with the car so I never use it.

To summarize some of the above, do I understand that:

The W213 has a 2 terrabyte hard drive, which can have music files copied to it and then played from there?

The SD port can use an SD card with music on it and then played from there? Or copied to the hard drive?

If no music was copied to the hard drive (I gather most do not do that), what is its purpose? Does it have the Nav system on it? If so, how much space is left?

Is there a preference in operation/playing between music files on hard drive or on SD card?

I assume tools to move/rename/delete/modify files on the hard drive are rather limited, while the SD card attached to my computer can have anything easily done to it? (My wife gets tired of ABBA for example.)

Inquiring minds want to know. I'm picking up my 2020 wagon tomorrow. ;-)

AFAIK there is no hard drive in the 213 models that is user accessible. (There is storage for system use such as onboard software.)
Music is played from a device in the SD port or one of the 3 USB ports. I have several thousand music tracks on a 256 GB card in the SD port. I copied them onto the card from my computer where I keep my music collection.

***EDIT***
I should clarify that the SD slot holds a CF card, aka Compact Flash card, not a microSD card.

That's what I've done in other cars. So, I guess the hard drive discussion was for the 2010 model +/- only. Thanks.

I normally just use apple music as I subscribe to that so I can the latest and greatest music out there. I do like good sound quality though and I have the feeling I'm missing out as I suspect apple is only a speed of 200 or something like that. I wish apple offered a high def service as an option say like 5 bucks over the std 9.99 service a month. Or is anyone aware of any high def music streaming service available? Maybe something that has a downloadable apple car play app? I really have no use for CD's anymore as I'm sure is the case with most people. I don't even know how to transfer HQ music to a thumb drive and would prefer not to take up my doing it.
