Some argue againat using products like Rain X fluid if your vehicle has auto sensing wipers. Lots of opinions in these forums and on the internet.

do not use any hydrophobic compound on your windshield, period. They react very negatively with MB wipers. You can use them on any other glass surface. I use MB summer and winter fit exclusively. They are a ripoff but they work very well. If in europe buy the gas station pink soapy fluid, it works great in summer. Wiper fluid in the US is uniformly ****.

I don't think it's the auto sensing wipers, it's the low windshield washer fluid sensor. Had to replace it on my W212, it looked fine though, wasn't gummed up like you might see on youtube. Some claim that the ph isn't quite right unless you just use regular windshield washer fluid. I just get the regular blue stuff at Walmart.

Sorry for the mistakes . Actually I'm asking about the windshield washer which put into the container , not the shampoo to wash the windshield . I mean the what fluid will put into it . I ask dealer he say they put MB original windshield washer . Can we buy it in the market?

M-B washer fluid comes as a concentrate known as Summerfit/Winterfit. Unavailable at the dearer, instead, purchased on Amazon. Following directions for dilution, one ends up with a gallon of fluid costing $8.00. Way over priced. It does, however, work very well. Has somewhat of a soapy consistency as it goes on the windscreen.

How important is using M-B branded fluid? Not much in my view. Washer fluid is not rocket science, therefore, brand is unimportant. Pick your poison.

In talking to the dealer service manager he advised me of a service bulletin stating not to use Rain X as it had a tendency to foul the reservoir guantity sensor. Additionally, he said the shop uses the same fluid one can buy at Wallmart.

It is easy to make one's own washer fluid, but it isn't worth the effort to save 2 bucks a gallon at your local discount warehouse.

In the winter, as I drive to Vermont, I look for a fluid that is good to minus 30. All other times one good to minus 20.

I have never found one fluid better than another. I always buy the cheapest on sale - it is only windshield wiper fluid!

Each time I wash my car I always put a nice coat of carnauba paste wax on my windshield. It prevents wiper usage in the rain and makes water bead when it rains.

Mercedes says use Summerfit/ Winterfit especially in applications with headlight washers as they aren't harmful to the headlight lenses. I don't have headlight washers, but I still use their Summerfit mixed w/ a gallon of water.

Harmful to headlight lenses?

As John McEnroe often said "You've got to be kidding!"

Do you take you car to a car wash? I do and nothing has ever happened to my headlight lenses.

If you are truly concerned put a coat of wax or Rain-X on the headlight lenses. That will not only keep them clean but protect them!

Crazing can happen - not uncommon for headlight lenses to get damaged over time. Even the owners manual says :NOTE Damage to the exterior lighting

due to unsuitable windshield washer fluid

Unsuitable windshield washer fluid may damage

the plastic surface of the exterior lighting.

# Only use windshield washer fluid that is

also suitable for plastic surfaces, e.g.

MB SummerFit or MB WinterFit.

I have seen hundred of cars that have hazing on their headlights. Not one of them had headlight washers!

The hazy is caused by oxidation and UV - not the type of washer fluid you use.

As I said put a coat of wax or Rain-X on your headlights - I do and they stay remarkable clean. I also do the rear tail lights as they are also plastic.

If you do have hazing problems, there are many products made to correct the problem:

Crazing is not the same as Hazing.. I was not talking about hazing.

Dear Camaroguy72:

Here is where I think we are:
  • You are worried about crazing not hazing on your headlight assembly when windshield washer is use.
  • You do not have windshield washers on you car
  • Your Mercedes adviser recommends either MB SummerFit or MB WinterFit to prevent crazing or is it hazing on your headlights?

What did you think your Mercedes adviser would say: Save a lot of money and use Rain-X instead of the more expensive MB SummerFit or WinterFit that he sells?

As most of us do not have headlight washers it seems, at least to me, you have a solution (using the more expensive MB SummerFit or WinterFit) looking for a problem!

I said mine doesn’t have it but I use it anyways. I got 6 summerfit bottles for $12, add a gallon of water at $0.80 - $2.80 a gallon. And the owners manual says to use one safe for plastic surfaces.

Six bottles of SummerFit for $12 ($2 each) is a great price. WHERE, please?

On Amazon:

$15.88 for one liter for WinterFit

In answer to question of how much to use, the following was posted:

In graphics on bottle: 2 parts water to 1 part Mercedes cleaner. Distilled water is suggested.

If that is true, than 1 liter plus two parts water is slightly less than a gallon which means a gallon will cost more than $17.50 or more than 8 times what I pay at Costco for Rain-X!!!

Is there any wonder the Mercedes service adviser recommended WinterFit!!!!!!!

Just found this:

1 to 1 ratio of Winterfit gives protection to -20C which is -4 Fahrenheit

So to get protection to -25 Fahrenheit I think you would not dilute it. ( drive to Vermont skiing and need protection to -25F)

The site below has it for $8.64 plus shipping. Pretty expensive!

Bought them on ebay in September 2019 ($11.98 for 6). I can't view the listing anymore , perhaps it was someone closing shop with surplus.. but I found it, and I bought it.

There are quite a few listings on eBay for SummerFit. Like 12 bottles for $20 (but $10.40 shipping), making the price per bottle $2.53 each, which isn't too bad. Or 6 for $16 plus $10.40 shipping, or $4.40 per bottle.
