I'm in the U.S. My car was at the dealer for Service A and I asked them, firmly, to update my Comand to 6.8 from 2.xx. There was some minor confusion as to what I wanted and, after discussion, they finally understood. I don't think they "like" to do it as it takes time. They typed on my worksheet that I was having trouble connecting to CarPlay which I think was a trigger to "allow" the upgrade. (I was not actually having trouble connecting to CarPlay. It was just slower with version 2.xx versus version 6.8) There was no charge for the upgrade. They had my car for a couple of days and gave me a loaner, so they had time to do the job.
Is there a list of these magic words? I know I have my service due this summer and would love to get mine updated.
The "magic words" or anything really were mentioned earlier in the thread, but if it wasn't clear the vehicle has to have a problem with a software and they use software updates to address it.

Any specific changes you noticed, I mean going from 2. to 6. is quite a jump.
My E400S4 was upgraded to 6.8 from 2.xx last week. CarPlay loads more quickly when I plug in now and the CarPlay graphics have been improved. Very pleased.
Nevermind I just noticed you already mentioned this, glad to hear the update improved things for you.

Reason why the previous post used quote under "problems" because they don't mean the vehicle has actual problems but you stated an issue and therefore they will update it to fix something that wasn't there anyways.

CarPlay definitely starts up more quickly when I plug in the iPhone. The CarPlay graphics on the screen improved, I guess a bit more modern looking and crisp. That’s what I’ve noticed so far.

I see, that is good and glad you went from version 2 to 6 there must be lots of changes in between those numbers.
COMMAND Online System v6.8, Updated on 15/05/2023, South East England, UK
I didn't notice any changes between v5.8 and v6.8.
Does any have the Change Log of v6.8?
Command Online System updated on 15 May 2023 from version 5.8 to 6.8.
Location: South East England, UK.
Car: MB E-Class 2016 Premium Plus w213.
Notes:
The dealership said the car should remain with them till the next day. However, using Mercedes Me, I can say that the actual update took less than 2 hours.
As for the new version 6.8, I have not noticed any changes so far.

5.8 to 6.8 is pretty minor jump (despite 5 to 6) but I heard it addressing Smartphone integration crashing issues caused by update 5. The prior versions didn't have that issue. Most updates for COMAND now are just bug fixes I figured since they are focusing on MBUX (mbux1 NTG 6.0, mbux2 NTG 7.0) or more likely MB. OS.
The versions in my 2018 E63S wagon seem to be completely different from the many pictures that people have uploaded into this thread. When I check for online updates it always says there are none available.
I have been having a lot of problems with Apple CarPlay, so I’d really like to make sure my NTG5.5 system has the latest available firmware.

Get it done, you need Xentry to update it, it is not an OTA update. The newer versions is significantly more smooth.

I'd love to get mine updated, but the local dealer seems to believe there have been no updates. I'm so frustrated! Another user above has updated from literally the same versions I have, but for some reason I am getting stonewalled.

Try a different dealership, not all are created equal.

Show the dealer this thread, tell them CarPlay is slow and wonky and be firm with them. These photos clearly show an update and I can assure you CarPlay runs more smoothly and quickly with the update. My 2018 E400 had the same version as yours and was updated to version 6.8 after firmly requesting it and the upgrade improved my CarPlay experience.
Hey everyone, I have a 2017 E400 Wagon that I bought used in January -
One of the first things I noticed on the way back from the dealership was Waze showing some crazy speed (130mph) while I was doing 70-80. Then I realized that there literally no button existed to skip tracks in one click (the skip button on the touchpad doesn't do anything) - I need to push media to get to Spotify and then click skip via the rotating wheel. And right-hand-side buttons on the steering wheel do not control the head unit while using CarPlay.
Then I found this thread and was super excited to get my SW updated from 00.59 to the latest since I understood that all these issues were resolved with later versions. And baaaam - got the same response from the dealer as @pintycar : tech specialist says the latest version they could see in Xentry was 00.61 and that's what they updated the system to. They mention all they can see is dictated by what MB makes available to that VIN. I'm very frustrated with this because I use CarPlay a lot, and these bugs are disheartening.
I tried MBUSA with no avail - they say that they don't do anything related to the head unit (sounds BS to me). And as of today, I emailed some random emails I found online for MB Germany (customer.care@daimler.com, dialog@daimler.com, dialog.mb@daimler.com) to explain the issue. Don't have any hope that this will get resolved but doesn't hurt to keep trying.
For the record @pintycar , I do have Burmester (810) but not 3D like you do (811).
Hello @optimus , and sorry for the late reply. It is indeed a bummer than paying extra for a higher quality sound system results in this blocking point for something as basic and fundamental to the car day-to-day usage as the infotainment system
I've stopped trying to get it updated and have taught myself how to live with it.. There are plenty of battles to fight with my car anyway... being an E43, the suspension is quite harsh and I have a plethora of ratlles. Not all is bad of course, but too many things are disappointing from Mercedes lately.
Anyway, thanks again for replying to my message and do keep me/us informed if you end up managing some progress! Thanks!
Dealers won't update software unless the customer has a specific issue such as "Car Play stopped working" that an update addresses. Updates to a functioning system just to have the latest release is risky as that is how new bugs are distributed.

Hello and thanks for replying. I absolutely agree with your statement, and maybe I didn't communicate the message properly, but it does not apply to my situation. I do indeed have many issues with the comand system: for example, if I change the radio station a few times in a row, it freezes completely and only restarting the car will bring the (super advanced funcionality) radio back. Android Auto works erratically too. And, in general, it is painfully slow, which in itself could be considered a bug. So, of course, I'm not asking for a software update for the sake of updating and seeing the latest "version number" in my screen. I have pretty good reasons to want the latest versions.
Cheers!
So my ED 1 had a 0.06.xxx version (the car never was updated).
Do not take this as gospel but for me to get to the latest 06.68 version was fairly straight forward.
NOTE: If you do this, it is at your own risk! Be mindful of the dealer/indy shops in your area as they might not want to...
So what i did was...
Dealer Menu > Dealer reset... Insta-brick of the infotainment system.
I took it to an indy shop... they put on the latest greatest without much pushback or fuss since well you know, the dealer reset kills audio and the infotainment completely. Easy peasy. Cost was the $175USD for a local indy shop to update. As an FYI, the car is WAYYYYYYY out of warranty as it currently sits at 131,000+ miles.
No it did not need a new infotainment.
No it did not need a battery disconnect (that does not do anything).
Only Xentry will update the version (something I am sure Benzninja can also do).

Wow! That's a drastic, yet effective, way of handling it! hehe
I don't think I'll do it but it's good to know that it worked for you. I'm afraid that if I did go down that route, the indy would have to revive the unit with the same version of the firmware that I have... and then I would have spent ~175USD (in euros) for 0 gain. I say this because I've actually seen how the dealer technician went inside the module and tried to update it and no updates were showing for him. So I don't know if I trust that an indy would have better luck :/
In any case, thanks for the suggestion! I do find it cool that you did that haha
