DPF regeneration

Any e220d owners out there able to explain how often this happens and anything i need to be cautious about.
i covered 365km weds and due to our speed restrictions it was mainly at a steady 80kmph with some 110kmph bursts. Friday on arrival at a destination 13km away the car was clearly completing a dpf regen as it smelt hot and the engine cooling fan was running for a couple of minutes after stopping. On the return diesel consumption was climbing during the journey and way above the value i am routinely seeing. On stopping the same conditions applied hot smell fan running.
the car has covered 1650 km. Today nothing and normal consumption........so after just 2 13km trips at 80kmph has the process completed succesfully. I can find nothing in the paper manual or the on line manual so mercedes seem to not expect the owner to take any special measures.
be interested in others experience or the sharing of any specialist knowledge.

I can't answer any of your specific points but in ten years of driving diesels (Mercedes and BMW) the only thing I've ever noted regarding regen is that the real time mileage seems to drop noticeably when it's in progress.Other than that...no problems...no worries...no issues.

Like you I have had mercedes diesels since 2008 with no probs so far so I shall take your advice and not worry. Does seem to be a whole industry out there at least in the uk generating worry about DPF though given the new diesel is very bad fashion they have quietend a bit on their hatred of dpf. I experienced the heat and smell in my GLK and W205 but not the very obvious increased fuel consumption - I suspect that may be a feature of the new 220d. Thanks for sharing your view.
