Doing your own service

Hi, I've always been a gearhead and I enjoy maintaining my cars, I feel it makes me aware of things to look over and fix things that don't look right before they fail. I'm going to stick with simple maintenance like brakes and oil changes on my Mercedes. It's not a matter of cost, it's that I enjoy it and like to know what's under the hood a little more than others.

On the Mercedes, I noticed most of you have your dealer service your car. I spoke with the Mercedes dealer and they will not void your warranty as long as you document the maintenance was done at the proper time, and the required maintenance was done.

Anyone else do their own maintenance ?

I noticed there are hardly any threads on working on these cars. I would have thought some of you install your own lowering springs, do brakes etc and post videos or make threads.

I guess being a luxury car, most just enjoy the car and let the dealer deal with everything else?

Guilty as charged. I'm not handy. I've never been handy. I typically open the hood when I get the car, you know, just to see there's really an engine under there. And that's typically the last time I pop the hood open, unless I've washed the car myself and I want to dry under there.

My question is this: If you do your own maintenance, what does MB consider proper documentation that it was done at the proper time and such? The simple service A can be handled by my brother and myself ( he's a mechanical engineer), he has his own lifts in his personal garage, so it would be no problem.

There's a hood? And it can be opened? Who knew.

While I prefer to have the dealer/mechanic perform my maintenance, I have known others who did their own and had to have an engine replaced under warranty at no cost (not a MB). You generally need receipts for the materials used, and it is suggested to keep a ledger with dated entries referring to work done with said materials.

Keep the receipts for the consumables as documentation.

Great, if that's all that's needed that's works for me. Anything else, outside a simple oil change and filter I will leave to the experts at my MB dealership.
