WIRELESS CHARGING/APPLE PAY/iPHONE 7S & CARPLAY QUESTION

Hello -

New owner of a 17 E440 wagon that has the wireless charging. I still have a 7S iPhone and can not let my phone get near the charger and "sit" in that spot as it activates Apple Pay on my phone.

It's kind of annoying to not be able to place my phone there & instead have to try to manuever it into a cupholder.

Aside from upgrading my phone - which I don't need to do at this time - is there any work-around? Is there any "material" that I can place over the charger to prevent that contact with my phone?

Also I have been successful at moving a number of apps from appearing in carplay in my car but I can't seem to be able to move "now playing" or "music". I listen to the radio when I am driving and do not want to listen to music on my phone.

Lastly is there any way that if you have your phone plugged in and CarPlay activated to use apple or google maps vs command navigation to keep the map on the screen if you have to stop and read an email or make a call? I miss not being able to multi-task the way CarPlay appears to work.

I found out how to get rid of text notifications showing on the screen which was a big plus for me as I found those pop-ups while driving distracting and annoying.

Thanks!

You need to disable NFC pairing on your iPhone, then you can charge wirelessly without opening the payment screen.

I can't find the NFC setting anywhere in my settings on my iPhone 7S to disable it. Calling Apple Support! Thanks.

Apple told me there is no setting on my phone and I'd need to ask dealer to see if they can disable NFC in my vehicle until I upgrade my phone.

They also said that when the new IOS software comes out in the Fall that CarPlay will have more options including a split screen for multi-functions. Not sure it will do what I want but we'll see.

Thanks.

Just disable NFC contact in COMAND then when you put your phone in the pad it doesn’t activate Apple Pay. One of the first things I did!

Bot quite sure I understand what you mean about CarPlay - it is very configurable now, but is soon to become a whole lot more configurable!

Look at the Command Settings on your MB center display. Under "System" and submenu "Connectivity", is a selection for NFC active. Just remove the check mark for NFC and your iPhone not try to go to Apple Pay when you put your phone on the console charger

I think I need to have my Command system updated per this post to get the updated menu options. https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...d-updated.html

Might be. I know in my 2018 and 2019 wagons I can turn off the NFC option. It was annoying until I read about it here.

From the picture you posted, it does not seem like you are looking at the correct COMAND menu.
Here's three self-explanatory illustrated steps to stop NFC from triggering Apple Pay on the iPhone for my 2018 E400 Coupe. You may need indeed to have your COMAND version updated, but look at your System Settings before bugging the dealer, which you should eventually anyway... Good luck!

Another case of Apple being way behind Android. My Samsung connects with NFC in lieu of BlueTooth if I wish. (It's more secure and doesn't require pairing.) That's what the NFC pad is for. Apple triggering Pay is really dumb.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with this statement. Yes, Samsung uses NFC for pairing, but that doesn't necessarily equate to better. It's different than how Apple does it, sure.

NFC has a much shorter range than Bluetooth. (-)
Bluetooth is much faster than NFC. (+)
Bluetooth consumes more power than NFC. (could be - but not really because Apple's implementation of Bluetooth is very low power consuming by design)
Bluetooth requires devices to be paired while NFC does not. (BIG - I want my device to have to pair and don't want my device to be able to connect to another NFC reader automatically - Thus NFC is less secure)

Then you should seek a Comand update from your dealer.

NFC Option

Connectivity NFC option-system settings
To Balthus-it appears you need to update your Command firmware at the MB dealer. My screen has the NFC option under connectivity and so does one other forum owner. My MB is a 2019 built in Feb 2019

Our 2018 E400 and 2019 E450 both have the option to turn NFC off in Comand settings under connectivity.

Do I need to use some specific reason to get them to update for free based on issues others have had getting the update done. Thanks.

If your car is still under warranty, a Comand update should not cost you anything.

Samsung uses both. It's up to you which you use. Pairing is false security, btw. NFC is more secure because it will only connect within centimeters. You don't have to worry about a software hack of your much wider BlueTooth signal. The much shorter range is a plus. Toss it in the console and it connects securely and starts charging. The speed is not a big deal. They're both way too slow for CarPlay/Android Auto, which is why you have to use a cable. Some day ...

But BlueTooth remains the way most people (myself included) connect the phone on Android. NFC is merely an option if you don't want to deal with pairing or want a hardware solution to eavesdropping. Opening Apple Pay instead is just a bug.

It's not bug if you turn off NFC in Connectivity Settings in the Comand system. I'm quite sure this is why Mercedes offers the option. iPhone owners have no need for NFC in the car.
