Are you going to tell us anything other than posting some photos of an engine sitting on wood?

The engine was getting replaced under warranty because the pistons was damaged and Mercedes had the new engine shipped over from Germany.

Its not everyday you see that engine out of the car let alone a brand new engine out of the crate.

Just thought I share.

Thanks for the explanation. It might have been nice if you had just told us before posting some pictures while we guessed.

The title did say new E400 engine and NOT replacement or warranty engine or why it is out of a engine crate.

One can can even let the imagination run wild as to why a engine needs to be replaced.

Just wanted to share what your engine looks like brand new freshly out of its packing.

What I'm curious about is why the engine pistons were damaged. Was the engine run without oil? What exactly happened?

Mike.

There is a documented piston wrist-pin defect in some 2015 C300 engines and I was told that my E300 uses the same engine as the C300. Just a thought.

That would have to be some pretty extreme detonation and for a length of time. I would expect detonation to burn up the piston head and probably burn an exhaust valve before the piston failed. The only time I've seen a piston damaged in an engine was in extreme racing.high rpm or when someone dropped a small screw down the intake This is pretty unusual no?

I didn't mean to be critical of the OP when I asked why the pics? I am just interested in why it happened. I've seen crate engines before.

Mike.

Just my $.02:

The OP is from Socal and Norcal which I assume is Southern and Northern Cal.

The fuel there, regardless of octane, could never have caused a piston failure.

Remember MB recommends but does require premium fuel - as per the owner's manual. The engines are designed to run on fuel other than premium, albeit with a 5% to 7% loss in HP.
