There is not a Tablet Icon at USB port.

Just log in to your phone and then connect to the USB in your car (which port depends on the region).
If you have CarPlay it will just appear on the screen - no need to do anything else.

If only there was some way of retrofitting wireless Carplay into the current W213 E-classes... It's annoying to have to physically connect the phone every time one wants to use it.

I am aware of iOS 13. I have been beta testing it myself. My question was that I do not see a split view as was mentioned. The map view with the calendar, as your BMW example shows.
But I figured it out, as an FYI for anyone else missing it. You need to have the Apple Maps app installed. Then you will be able to scroll far left to view the "summary" screen view.
Meanwhile not having Apple Maps app installed this view is not an option. I guess people still prefer to use the crappy default navigation app for some reason which is fine, but since I deleted mine all together apparently I am limited to only the standard app icon view.
Without Apple maps installed you do not have 3 screens, with your main screen being the middle 2nd screen. It is the first.
