Installation of RFID front bumper toll reader transponder
I also prefer not to have the light gray backed self adhesive windshield type decal style RFID reader on the inside my front windshield and therefore am considering a means to install it on the front of the car (bumper/grille area) without a license plate mounting bracket. Ideally, I'd love to simply mount it on the rear license plate bracket but was told by my toll road authority...that won't work.
Case in point, for now I'm considering trying to mount it to the perforated section of the lower air dam below the grille using small bolts & nuts with backing washers - if I can get to the back of the air dam from beneath the car.
Any ideas, suggestions or better examples of what you (or others) with similar interest or desire have done would be appreciated.
FWIW and if unclear, below is the type of RFID reader I'm referring to.

Check with your toll authority whether the hardcase device can be read successfully, if mounted that low. The bumper might interfere if tags are read from directly overhead at the toll plaza.
The toll authorities in my state (TX) are doing away with "hard case" toll tags. They recently deactivated all of mine (4 vehicles) and sent me windshield toll stickers instead. Bummer, but that is progress, I guess...

(their default answer was no, it must be placed along with the front license plate but then again, I'm not convinced the toll road authority desk clerk that told me that actually knows for certain.
In terms of the device being easy to steal, the good part of such a bad situation (theft) is that it easily be deactivated online if needed. Have had multiple autos over multiple years using them and theft of one has never once been an issue.
That said, I'm going to try simply laying it on the top of the dash up against the inside of the windshield (think defroster vent area) and see if gets "detected/read" by the automated toll readers and if it does, then I'll just attach it semi-permanently on the dash just ahead of the defroster vent slats using a 3M command strip (that can later be removed without damaging the dash surface). All this, needless to state is to avoid having that "blank gray decal backing" off center of the windshield.
Call it vain, whatever, I simply don't like it the gray sticker aside my rear view mirror/forward camera zone and question (myself) why the toll road authority can simply move to windshield decal with a black adhesive backing.
The other question I have (for myself) is with the optional PAF acoustic and heat absorbing membranes in the windshield and side glass, if the toll reader devices will actually be able to read the tag. Some trial and error to come.
About the PAF package, check the manual. I’m pretty sure is says something about placement for some transponders. I don’t have anything to place in the windshield, so I just skimmed that.

Perfect solution for a RFID plate mount toll reader (ex-plate mount) and I'm pretty sure it will be "readable".
As to the PAF, you were also correct, I checked the owner's manual and it clearly indicates the areas of the windshield that are acceptable for use/placement of toll decals, which is why I want to avoid placement of a toll tag decal with light-gray colored backing on it.
