Red face Just got my W213 and need a few pointers!

Hello all!

I just got my W213 and I love it, but I am confused about the apps, internet connection, paid for services etc.
I tried the on-board instructions but I found it quite confusing. Can I find an easy step by step guide to help me with this?

And another thing too, the passenger air bag is off. Can I turn it back on without visiting the dealership?

Follow up: the car tells me that Android Auto only works when connected using USB-cable. Can that be correct? If so, then its a bit of a hassle.

And: I have the Huawei P30 Pro with a slim cover. It seems to be a bit too large for the induction charging slot. Can I do anything to fix this?

Press the phone button in the overhead console and activate the internet service or have them assist. The passenger side airbag will be off if no one or an object not large or heavy enough present.

Correct, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay only works via USB cable or aftermarket wireless dongle.

It takes time to learn all the features and using them. Sometime you just need to sit in the car a while in the garage and go through all the menus and settings and play with things. First step of course is connect the bluetooth on your phone. You can use it via bluetooth to play music but not apple CarPlay /Android Auto. Next step WIFI Connection. Then verifying all the settings and preferences are what you want. Activating the MB app so it works with your car can be a little a tricky, might want to have the dealer salesman/woman help you out with that one. They actually need to initialize it at the dealership. If not initialized properly it won't work right, thats what happened to me with my E450 wagon and I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work when it would not have worked as the dealer did not have the info of the car in the computer on their end. Needless to say that car salesman no longer works for the dealership. Must have happened to a lot of people with him.

Also, the product concierge at your dealership, or using the Mercedes Me app Plus there are some "how to" videos (don't know if they cover your specific needs) at MBUSA.com site.
Welcome...and good luck.

If you don't mind having to plug in your phone to charge it, and you want to be able to see the phone (and, for me, use Apple CarPlay) this mount is available for $20 on that site named for a river in South America, and makes me smile for its design. There are a variety of phone holders, but I like the magnetic mount.

I love the clean look of not having any cables on the dashboard, and induction charging is something I relly like.

What will I miss out on when not using Android Auto? I Android Auto was a "cheap" solution for cars with less features.

Welcome and congratulations on your W213

I personally never use CarPlay or Android Auto because everything I want the COMAND system to do, it does without the need for CarPlay/Android Auto. For telephone functions and listening to music from my phone, that happens over Bluetooth.

I suppose some people prefer Google Maps to the COMAND navigation system, and CarPlay (i'm not sure about Android Auto) allows you to have your unread WhatsApp messages read out to you and you can reply by voice. I prefer Mercedes' built-in maps, and I'm not much of a WhatsApp-er - if its something urgent then they will call me

Thanks! I think I'll leave the CarPlay alone and focus on trying to understand the built-in features, which I myst admit to being a bit confused by

As someone said, I'll just have to sit in the car and play around a bit with all the features

This is the best way.

Do you have ambient lighting? That's pretty fun to set up.... so many colours to choose from! - although I personally stuck to just white light in the end!

I think Android Auto or Apple Carplay is far superior when finding locations to navigate; I'm been disappointed with the internal NAV system for not finding businesses that should easily be found, but aren't. But I dislike having to plug in my phone, not only because it takes a few seconds, but because I'll leave my phone in the car when I leave. So, lately I'll ask Google, or have the wife ask Siri, what the address is of where I want to go, then voice enter it into COMAND. Not the cleanest system, IMHO. I will no doubt connect Android Auto when I'm on long trips.

If you or whomever finds the location on google maps just send it to your car - works while driving - just accept and you're set.

I stand corrected - now that MB has switched to Mercedes Me - this is no longer available - you can do the same thing from the Mercedes Me app on your phone.

Ambient lighting is standard on all 2017+ E-class sold in the US.

I didn't realise this - This must be the case for UK cars as well then (I'm in the UK).
I have the E53 AMG Premium Plus so I don't really know what is or isn't standard on the non-AMG cars.

The sending your google maps adress to the car works for me with mercedes me atleast. I think only BMW have wireless carplay, never heard of wireless android auto though. Log in to mercedes me and there you can see what services to use and the cost.

I still try to get internet to work in the car. I have Tidal, but in the car I can only select TuneIn and TuneIn does let me select stations to listen to but it never starts playing. Strange.

And something completely different. Whats the general reliability of the 213? Can I keep it for a few years after the warranty runs out, or will that be a massve money pit?

only certain tunein stations work for me, a lot just don’t work for some reason which is disappointing. I hope they get this sorted out, whatever the reason causing it is.

I’ve not tried Tidal.

That's exactly why I use Android Auto. Endless list of radio internet stations to play and as I like hard rock/metal... oooooooh I am being spoiled .
Also using Waze, tells me about speed cameras and potentially police or other "danger" on the road.

I have a huge music list on my phone that I used to play over bluetooth, but since Android Auto, it has not been used.

Can't tell you about the post warranty, as I have mine only since September.

BTW welcome to the forum.

I have had mine from June 2017 with only 27,500 miles and so far only minor issues covered by warranty. Only one thing out of pocket was rear rotors.First time in 30 years planning on keeping a car longer than 3 years. I actually plan on keeping it for 10 years, I purchased the 7 years Extended Warranty. Good luck and enjoy

Yes. Read the owners manual. It explains how to do it.

The rear rotor issue must be problematic then! I had the dealership tell me my rear brakes & rotors needed to be serviced soon after I complained of excessive squeaking and my car has less than 30,000 miles. I've owned over 15 cars and have never had rear brakes go bad this fast. This is my first German car but every other car I've ever owned always had front brakes serviced way before the rear brakes went bad!

Anybody out there know of any TSB's or recalls relating to the rear braking system on the 2017 E300 Sedan?

If I'm not mistaken, the rear brakes wear out so quickly because all the stability/safety/lane keep systems use the rear brakes functionally as needed. Hence, the need to replace much sooner than our old "normal" cars.
