I'd be more inclined to get the new wagon if it had the option to paint the cladding the same colour as the body. The Audi All Road has that option, and of course it's only for the more expensive colours.
I test drove an A6 Allroad with the painted cladding and its very poorly executed for the $1000 cost. It isn't smooth like the rest of the car, its almost a matt paint so it has bumps all over it. I didn't think it was much better than the regular cladding which I also don't like.
I think the best looking wagon on sale right now is the Volvo V60. Its design is just so beautiful and modern, and the plaid interior! Sadly, the rest of the car isn't as good as its looks, from its powertrain, lack of AWD (unless Polestar or Raised/Cladded), and subpar infotainment.
I test drove an Allroad this summer and loved the drive, smooth and powerful. I also like the interior, was nicely finished and the wood grain they had in the car I drove was a nice natural finish with rough grain which was lovely. The not so good, I need the space for my two Greyhounds and it was very small back there. With the rear seats down it was only 54 cu ft compared the to E450 which has 64 cu ft. Making it worse, was the fact the rear seats when folded down don't lie flat, they sat at about 25 degrees consuming even more space. I passed on it for the small interior cargo space. If the space is not as big a requirement for you, then it might work for you.

The V90 is also good looking, but I love the smaller proportions of the V60. The problem with any modern Volvo is, the powertrain and infotainment don't live up to the great looks. My wife looked at a V60, but they are available with FWD unless you want cladding, and she didn't like how gritty the four-cylinder was and the lack of physical controls. She ended up with a GLC because of the huge back seat space, beautiful interior and space for the dog. She liked the E-Wagon but found it too big as she wanted a compact car, and she likes the newer MBUX interior updates over command, and the A4 Allroad she didn't like the refresh or the small rear seat legroom.
JS, I'm in the same situation. I am drawn to the E wagon but my wife favors a SUV. Our X5 is really more than we need so a GLC size SUV is probably what we will buy when the X5 lease is up in about a year. I also plan to check out the GV70.

One of the draws to the GLC was the fact that it had rear legroom the size of the X5. As someone who does not like BMW’s current direction (prior customer of 25+ years) their SUV’s are the only good vehicles left but even those don’t drive well sadly. The interior of the new X5 is beautiful though, but still car was too big for the wife. We also checked out the X3 but disliked the boring design inside and out, seat comfort and inferior materials. Wife has no regrets with her GLC, and its her first Mercedes as well.
The new GV70 looks really good and unique (especially with the 928-esque C-pillar) although it looks very small, but I’ll wait of course till I see it in person. Genesis is doing some great things. My biggest issue currently with Genesis is the dealer network sucks since they are all Hyundai dealers. I think they should take a page out of Lexus’ book. Also the new GV80 is already being marked up anywhere from $5-10k! I would never buy a car like that over sticker.
Good points, JS. I will test drive a GLC and a Q5 next month when the X5 goes in for it's annual service. Sun Motors in Mechanicsburg, PA has a BMW, MB, Audi and Porsche dealerships in the same location.
I finally pulled the trigger on a 2020 E450 Wagon. Inventory is running low and found exactly what I wanted feature/option wise but got 2nd choice in exterior color which I'm fine with. The car is in Akron OH, so will fly up there and drive it back. I got 10.5% off MSRP and the car has 982 miles on it. The GM's wife started driving it on Sept 22nd which is the in-service date. Here is the spec.

Only if you are anti wagons. I happen to like certain SUV's and pretty much most wagons. I have a 2018 X5 diesel which is the most fun SUV I've driven, tons of torque and great fuel consumption and it handles much better than it should. That being said, in most cases I prefer driving a wagon. Each unto his own I guess

I'm not anti wagon, just pragmatic. My sister and her husband owned a Volvo wagon back in the late 90's. When the time came to move on, they tried to sell it privately, as no dealer would offer any money for it in trade. Not even a penney.
A year passes and the private sale idea went nowhere, too. They couldn't give it away to a stranger, and by that time, their son became of driving age. So they gave it to him to drive to college. He drove the wheels off it and sold it for scrap.

Times have certainly changed since then. I've owned several wagons since 2006 and never had trouble trading them in when I wanted something else. Did this happen here in Texas? I lived in the North East for fifteen years and wagons are very popular up there, they are common sight everywhere.

Older Volvos, your previous one and older, are the reason my wife wouldn't even consider owning one and it is the butt of so many jokes. So bland, or previously boxy, there's a huge contrast between the current era Volvo. I was shocked myself when I looked at them, they're so different (good) looking now.

We have both since my wife wanted the SUV to sit higher and I like the sedan ride but the SUV space to haul things around. When I want to really enjoy driving, I take the Miata out which the wife won’t get into since its so low to the ground. This is my 5th MB wagon.

MB produced 1 wagon right? And it’s how much? How many SUV’s do they produce? 70k is a lot of money bubba. Not many people can afford that kinda purchase. How many wagons are made across all auto brands? I would never drive an SUV. I’d only buy a sedan. So I’d buy a wagon, maybe. I just don’t see a future for them. It’s like a hybrid of an SUV and a sedan. Which is why I said niche. People never drove electric cars 15 years ago. We might be arguing about VCR’s and Cassette players for all we know LOL. Who knows what we’ll be driving. And quite frankly who cares. I’m just blabbering on these forums. All for fun man. Cheers
