.
For MY 2018 and earlier a visit to the dealer for map updates is required. OTA updates started with MY 2019.

if your 3 years are up, you will have to pay.

My MY 2018 E300 came with 4 years of updates, not 3.

As said above. You have 3 years of free map updates, so depending on when you bought your car you may have missed your chance and now have to pay. Prior to MY2019 a dealer visit is required to update the maps. Map updates come out 2-3 times a year. Starting with MY2019 (Mercedes me connect), the map updates for one's home region (entire western USA for me for example) get pushed to the car automatically as an OTA update and installed in the background. The remaining regions can be downloaded manually from the Mercedes me connect website onto a USB stick or SD card and then stick in the car to do the update. In both cases the map updates are free for 3 years.

Just last week, my Service Advisor (SA) quoted me $225+ for updated maps for my 2017 E300, which still had 2017 maps (I bought it CPO in 2020) and he said my car did not qualify for 3 years of free maps. After scouring this MBWorld forums I decided to try mbnavupdate.com since several folks posted good results.

So, just yesterday, I updated maps to V20 (2020 maps). It involved me downloading the maps for $129, extracting the zip file, loading it on to an SD card (USB can also be used) and loading it in the car. Took about ½ hour to download the 21GB zip file, a bit of time to do the extraction and copy to SD card and then about 40 minutes to load into the car itself. mbnavupdate.com provided directions on how to do all of that and I was able to follow them. Really the only reason I did it is because I could and didn't want to pay MB $225. That said, $129 is also a bit steep, but I guess I wanted to stick it to my SA.

If doing the download, extraction, copy to SD/USB is too complicated, for an extra $20 mbnavupdate.com will mail a USB to customers.

Thanks for the info. I don’t think the SA really cares. Obviously you were passed the 3 year period.

Just had free map (navigation) update done last week during Service A. Interesting in that my car is MY 2018 but purchased in Dec 2017, so over three years old; and that map upgrade was to NA v.19 - not v.20 as shown above. Going to have to call my SA and see what's going on.

It's likely that V19 was the last one that you are technically eligible for free of charge. So even if you are past the 3 years, they may install the last update that falls within your three years free of charge. I know this is how it works with Audi. V20 came out at the end of December 2020. likely after your 3 years expired. Just a hunch.

Did the same thing. Worked like a champ. Just make sure thumbdrive is formatted properly.
