Stearing malfunction message

I was sitting at a stop light and all the sudden my steering started to making a load shuttering noises and the steering wheel starts shaking and a light come on that says steering malfunction pull over immediately and check owners manual. I turned it off and let it sit for 5 minutes and restarted it and it still has the issue. I drove it home 2 miles and I'm wondering WTF.

Seems to me that the ability to steer a car is kinda important. It may be an error due to a bad sensor or something, but I wouldn't drive it at all (including to the shop) until it's been properly diagnosed by a professional mechanic and repaired if necessary. Since you are clearly aware of the error message, you would undoubtedly be held solely liable for any accident that might occur due to faulty steering.

I was able to steer the car. It was the power assist that was affected. I parked it and it will be towed to the repair shop. I don't want to cause anymore damage. Thanks for the reply.

My dealer won't tow cars — flatbed only to avoid possible damage.

Thanks all... The service bulletin is helpful meaning no goodwill replacement so bend over and grab ankles. I plan on flatbed towing towing the car to avoid any additional damage. Thought I would not have such issues with a Mercedes with 38K miles ...I guess I'm still thinking old school.
