Pre-Owned E450

I am selling my 2014 E550 and looking to upgrade to a 2019 E450. How is everyone liking them? Any option to avoid getting?

2019 E450 wagon: 2019 BMW 430i: 2013 Chevy Traverse: (departed)2013 SL550 & 2019 E450 cab
We have had a 2019 A238 cabriolet, and the W213 wagon. IMO, perhaps one of the best of the M-B vehicle platforms. Engine gets good mileage, appointments are quite accommodating, and the competency of the vehicle is superb. For my money, and depending on the roads you drive on regularly, I would prefer the 18" tire / wheel package, mitigating impacts and reducing opportunity for bent rims / cut sidewalls. Other than that, the functionality of the dual screen dash also provides appeal over the combo analog / digital. Enjoy the hunt!

2019 is a great year - the first year of the new Mercedes Me Connect and over the air updates for certain things. I think you really cannot go wrong - just watch out for cracking MB-Tex, and also cracks in the hand rest in the center console.

The 2019 E450 is a solid car, more fun to drive than the last generation, the ride is a bit stiffer too. Options I would stay away from are the air suspension and the expensive build in air freshener. Common but rare problems are cylinder cracking, touch pad screen cracking or air suspensions problem. E450 cabriolet
Impressions:

I’ve had my 2020 e450 cabriolet for a few weeks now (traded up from a 2019 C300). Black exterior, red and black seats, piano line black “designo” dash. I’ve been *very* pleased with it: incredible interior and a great driver. The sport + mode is fun, but strikes me as *much* more aggressive than sport + on my c300, so I use it sparingly. But when I do, wow! It can really slam you back in your seat. In a perfect world, I’d like sport + to have a bit of a deeper (not louder) exhaust note; like, a bit more of a growl.

The Burmeister stereo in my e450 is a significant step up from the Burmeister stereo in my c300. Which is saying something!

If I recall correctly, the 2020 e450 is the last year to *not* have a touch screen. I greatly prefer non-touchscreen vehicles for safety and functionality reasons.

As the weather starts to get chillier, I’m already noticing the beginnings of the dreaded “Mercedes squeak” on the brakes, which I’ve had on all three of my Mercedes. I’ll probably take it in soon to have them do whatever it is they do to temporarily ameliorate it…

Specific to the cabriolet:

I’ve been impressed by the sound insulation with the top up.

The trunk space is better than I thought it’d be.

The “airscarf” neck heater thing works *really* well.

Thank you for all the responses. I took it for a ride the other day and I will pick it up on Monday. I can't wait to drive it home, feels like a nice upgrade despite missing two cylinders. But I think I am going to gain more options and some updates. I will be putting an extended warranty on it just in case. I have a set of 19inch graphite Staggered Forgestar wheels from my E550, I am hoping they will fit if not I will just wait it out until I need new tires. It sounded really quiet inside, but once I opened up the windows and sunroof I was able to hear the power of the v6. It is sad day to get rid of my E550 for sure. I really enjoyed the ride, power and look of the W212.

Monday can't come soon enough.

I have a 2019 E450 where the warranty ends on 12/30/2022: I have been toying whether to get the extended warranty or not.

At this time I have decided not to get the extended warranty
  • I have only 30,000 miles on the car, so I average 7,500 miles per year. If I continue to drive 7,500 miles in three years, I will have just over 52,000 miles. The ELW for 3 years is 75,000 or 100,000 miles. So the pricing is for 75,000 about 1/3 more than I plan to drive.
  • My car has been trouble free. The only repair was at 3 months the light switch controlling the intelligent lighting had to be replaced. Nothing since
  • The cheapest 3 year/75,000 mile warranty I was able to find was $2200 plus tax, my cost $2400. I calculate the use of money at 5%, which for 3 years is an additional $350 so my actual cost will be $2,750.
As people have posted the 2019 V6 engine is "bullet proof" and the transmission and suspension parts should be good for 100,000 miles. The other big expense are the electronics. My experience is that if the electronics are bad, problems arrive in the first year.

Just my $.02 and hope this helps.

Well I just received the call yesterday that the car is not ready to pick up yet. I guess some things need to be sorted out before it is certified. I will keep you all posted.

If I was buying that car, I would want to know what needs to be sort out before the car can be Certify.

Dubber - I am with the G Man on this point... Keep in mind, certification doesn't mean you don't still need to do your due diligence. I was drooling over this car for a month, and finally drove 5 hours to go look at it and planned to buy it. (Luxury series, nappa leather, really nicely equipped and CERTIFIED car...)

Asked the sales rep about the minor damage reported on the carfax - didn't like that, but he assured me that it was in A1 condition and probably had "bumper touch ups." I asked if he had any paperwork on the repairs, he said no. Given how nice the car looked in pictures, I took the chance and drove up. I get there - car looks "OK" in person, but not great. Paint looked like rental car paint that's been through a carwash 100 times in 6 months. I get in the car, look around and find the receipt in the glovebox from Caliber Collision for $6K in repairs - that included bumper, hood, core support work and a windshield replacement. (Car had been in more than a minor accident.) 15 minutes later, I was back in my car headed home. That was a month ago and the car is still sitting for sale - good luck to them trying to sell that thing.

So - they can certify a car that isn't really worth buying - your due diligence is still really important. Have them provide the VMI, so you can see the service history and look the thing over really closely in person in daylight on a dry day.

Best of luck with your purchase - there's lots of great Certified inventory around, you just need to be careful.

I concur with getting the VMI - Some dealers will not print it out for you, only will let you look at it on screen, Issue with the VMI is that it only shows what Mercedes has done to the car, but if the car is truly worth buying then only Mercedes should have done ALL the work. I know all of you with great Independant's might disagree - but if I were buying it used, I would only buy if Mercedes was the only 1 that touched it.

I should be hearing back from the dealership today or tomorrow about when pickup is. Before I was even able to see the car I went ahead and ran a carfax on the car just to make sure their was no reported damage, there is none but you need to take carfax with a grain of salt as I am seeing that some of the reports show accidents after purchase and carfax is saying they are behind due to covid. I did take the car out on a sunny day and go for a ride. When I was done driving it I pulled into an empty parking lot and looked it all over to see any prior damage and see if it was a car wash queen. Since I have a great relationship with this dealership I can have them run me a VMI which I will do. For me I think certifying the car just gives me piece of mind. Also they are giving me a list of what needed to be done. I will keep this post updated as soon as I know.

Thank You to everyone that gave me insight and assistance on my new purchase. The car is amazing despite missing 2 cylinders from the E550. I really enjoyed the ride home, it was a sad day to see my old car go but I think I made the right choice. I did get the extended warranty through the dealership and that was it. I will post pictures as soon as I am able to.

I am hoping to be a more active member on this site now.
