Windshield Wipers - Intermittent

I have a 2017 E300, Sports version. When it is raining and I turn off the ignition the wipers continue to run. When I open the door the wipers stop at whatever position they were at that instant. So they stop at the top, middle or bottom. I have to restart the car, and time it so that it stops at the bottom position when I open the door. The dealership claims that this is how it works on the new models. I never had that issue with the three previous e-series that I have owned. Can anyone confirm this, and is this supposed to be how it works ?

no, when you turn off ignition, the wipers go to the "rest" position.
only if you cut the engine and immediately open the door, the wipers will also stop

EDIT: in fact my car does exact same thing as OP

No. When I turn off the ignition the wipers do not stop. They continue until I open the door.

poker face + finger.... factory service 🙃

It is sad that your dealer is disregarding the evidence your Mercedes is in crisis. Your past E-class experience ensures ithis is not "user error".

You can call MB USA but that will hardly help fix your wipers from "independent dealers".

How MB smart wipers works:
  1. the wipers module is powered by
  2. the F-SAM that reads status from
  3. the rain sensor on windshield

Unfortunately all 3 items: Wipers, SAM, Sensor are able to spoil your ownership.

Luckily MB car systems are computerized. Any factory trained technicians can seriously diagnose your car faults.

90% chance the issue lays with failed crazy sensor that need to be reinitialized with Xentry. Easy steps, no parts really needed.

Tested it on my 2019 E300, turn on wipers, shut off ignition, wipers continues to run. When I open the door, the wipers stop at mid travel, the wipers does not go back to rest mode when the door is open. I am surprise Mercedes if indeed took this out since it is a software function and cost Mercedes nothing to install.

What do you mean with "Mercedes took this out"? Egonvdv has a very new (21?) E-class and it works as it should, nothing has been taken out.

Either the car is broken or it is a user error if wiper do not stop at the rest position when the car is parked (assuming the door is not opened too soon). Just wondering what the driver could do wrong here.

If the wipers stopping "unparked" is that troublesome, the simple fix is to turn the wipers off when leaving thee car.

Isn't this actually a feature of sorts to accommodate changing the blade and/or lifting the swing arm away from the window to reduce ice built-up when parked?

Your experience is normal function for MB wipers.

Park the car, switch wipers off using the stalk knob, turn the ignition off, then carry on by opening the door and exiting the vehicle or sitting in your car as desired.

The wipers do stop wherever they are on the windshield when the door is opened. However, even if they are in the wiping up motion and stopped, they will immediately go back down (instead of finishing the upward swipe) when the ignition is turned on. And then they will pause a bit and not wipe, giving you enough time to turn off ignition. Im fine with the way this worked. Maybe I've never owned anything higher end than an E class, but Ive never owned a car that would finish swiping when turning off ignition/opening door.

Opening the door is more or less obvious but I thought switching off ignition would not stop the wipers before the rest position. Perhaps I'm also mistaken because I hardly ever park the car outside, specifically when it is raining.

EDIT: I have wipers on the first intermittent setting almost always. Makes the wipers stop when entering the garage and wipers start when driving in rain. No need to change the setting in different conditions.

No, this is wrong. MB wipers stop wherever they are positioned in mid-wipe when the engine is off followed by the door being opened.

yes, in my post, Im saying they will stop where they are when the door is opened, but if you restart the accessory mode, they will go straight down, instead of finishing the upward swipe.
