diagnostic fee
I left the car for the dealer to repair. I just didn’t have the time -or the fortitude-to deal with the problem and the hassle. They replaced the fuel pump and the check engine light is gone. They gave me a 15% discount for a $1500 total charge, including diagnosis. I probably could have saved money elsewhere, although the loaner for several days was worth $2-300 and my time was worth something. I’m OK with the result. Thanks for all the input.

You wouldn't have saved enough to make the hassle worth it. You might have saved $200-$300.

The dealer quoted $1600 for replacing the fuel pump, including $450 for diagnosis. He has ordered the parts and i have a loaner. I can always cancel. There’s no open ended amount. If I cancel, he’ll probably
want at least the $450 diagnosis charge.
$1600 less 15% is $1360.
