I have bought a new (to me) 2021 E300de, I love it so far.
I was told it has active park assist (where it parks itself). All the sensors work when parking manually, and I have the button (left of the multimedia pad) but when I press it, it says “Active park assist is unavailable, please check the manual”.
the garage I bought it from has it booked in to “calibrate the sensors”, but I’m not convinced they really know what they’re doing.
my question, how do I know if my car definitely has this option installed? And if it just broken or is it not there at all? I ask as every e300de I have seen for sale has the button!
I have the VIN but can’t find any decent website that will decode it for me and tell me what is on the car.

You really need to have a Mercedes scan tool to scan your radar control module for any codes. If there are no codes, then you may still need to calibrate the control module. There are two controllers that you need to check, N62 - Parking system (PTS) and N62/2 - Radar sensors control unit (SGR).
The best scanner to get is XENTRY (or more accurately, the Star Diagnosis System (SDS)). @BenzNinja is the best source for that.

The problem is (at least for my 2015 car) is that Active Parking Assist isn't always available. I often get error codes about my sensors being disrupted and that disables the Active Parking Assist. I have no idea what the external transmitter is. The DTCs always show as Stored, meaning not currently active.
Ah ok, that’s what the dealer fobbed me off with on the test drive “it’s too busy a car park”, but it’s never worked (had it 1 week), it’s always coming up with the error.
just glad I’m certain it does have the feature now, and hopefully they’ll figure out why it’s not working.

When Parktronic is working, you will see a little arrowhead to the right or left of the P symbol. That means a space for the car has been detected to the right or left of the direction of travel. You are supposed to pull past the space, stop, and put the car in reverse. It then is supposed to park itself. I think it is primarily intended for parallel parking. I've never used it. There are YouTube videos on how it works.
Here's a good video that does a pretty good job showing and demonstrating the system. He starts with the older system and then demonstrate the newer system. The newer system does the gear changing and everything automatically. Specific differences may depend on the model. The very latest system available in the S Class even has remote parking, but as far as I know this is not available in North America.

Here's something else I found. Basically, it is saying to remove any license plate frame and ensure the license plate is flush with the bumper. This is another great use of XENTRY.
