The 213 is more efficient in its engine and transmission then the prior 212. Speaking to the E300/350 2.0L with 9G transmission, compared to the V6 with 7G transmission.
Watch this video to understand the efficiency testing results, it answers alot of questions people have.
Maybe MB reallocated some costs from the interior into the R&D for the powertrain upgrades they wanted/needed to do?

Agree, especially going from 6 to 4 cylinders, it is not as smooth.
As for 7G to 9G, agree as well yes it is more efficient but the car is in a rush to get to the highest gear as possible even at low speeds, not the ideal experience for sure.
