battery change/sam reprogramming?
Hi,
A little embarrassed posting a new battery thread. My 2019 e450 wagon needs a new battery ("Stop vehicle. Leave engine running" & "12V battery critical") and driving the car for a while doesn't seem to get rid of the messages. It's a 6 year old battery so expect that's it time for a new one. The dealership says it's 1.8 hours to change a battery which means it's prob close to $1,000 all in. I read online that one can't just pop in an aftermarket battery and front SAM needs to be reset/reprogrammed. The SA said something along those lines.
Wondering if any of you have changed the the E450 battery yourself and if so was there a need to fuss with the SAM?

As for registering in SAM, that is optional but ideal to let the vehicle know you changed the battery, scanners capable with reading MB codes are usually able to program and register SAM. XENTRY that the dealership used is MB's official tool and you don't need something that advanced for registering the battery.

For the procedure, please kindly see attached, please kindly note this procedure mainly applies to the pre-facelift 213, I am not sure if facelift changed anything including but not limited to the location.

My $59 Harbor Freight Bluetooth OBD dongle has a feature to register the new battery to the car system once it has identified that its plugged into my car and knows the VIN. Might be worth the small cost of entry to check it out.

2018 E43 AMG
Just went through this today. I have a 2018 E43 AMG. Like yours, my battery was 6 years old and due for replacement. Was initially planning to go the aftermarket route for an AGM battery and have the dealership reprogram SAM but most places were charging around $100. My dealership was running a battery special installed for 12%. Ended up going the dealership route. Paid $465 installed.

Before going in remove the cover over the battery and the drain hose. You can replace the drain hose yourself.
Cost under $200 installed with 4 year warranty: If anything goes wrong within 4 years free replacement - no questions asked!

Many thanks for all your replies especially those that posted links to how-tos and products. When I called around the consensus was that the SAM bit was needed (I get that they may be biased!), so I had an indy replace the battery, do the SAM thing and while he was at it, replace the little voltage converter (passenger footwell). Two observations:
1. That voltage converter replacement requires an impressive amount of contortion
2. (you may know this) TIL the hood can be made to stand almost vertical for easier access and safety — there are little tabs on the hinge to raise the hood further
More expensive than going to Walmart but far less than at the dealership. Thanks again!

I put in a new Walmart battery in my 2020 wagon last month after getting the same dire warnings.
Mentioned it to the SA while it was in there for unrelated work. They charged $65 to 'reset battery throughput'.
Speaking with the tech, it isn't like the BMW system that adjusts charging based on battery age/behavior, and one can get by without it.
My iCarsoft wanted nothing to do with it.

During my last research on this topic, there's only two companies that make AGM batteries. Stores and retailers brand them with their own label, but otherwise they're all basically the same.
