Oil stick or only display?
Oil stick or only display?
Hi,
Just got my self an All Terrain 220d.
But I get a warning saying overfilled with engine oil.
Is there a hidden oil stick on these, or is it only via the display you can see how much oil you have?
Since it is warning me I would like to get some oil out. Was thinking if there was like in the good old days with an oil stick you might could suck some out.
One other possibillity could be suck some out from the oil-filter reservoar.
Or du I have to do a cpmplete oil change?
Regards
Mats

I wish dipsticks were still present, but we're now all dealing with sensors and displays. When I did my first oil change, I overfilled by 1/2 qt by following the specs in the OM. For me, it was easiest to remove the excess using the drain plug in the oil filter cannister rather than the sump drain plug. About 1/2 qt came out immediately without spilling too much. Another 1/2 qt took another 20 minutes.
At some point, MB stopped building engines with dip sticks. If yours is one, you have to drain through the drain plug under the car. If it's like mine, you can loosen the plug just a bit to slowly drain some out. You could pull the top side filter and suction some out, but I'm not sure you will get enough as I've never tried that.
When changing oil, always put less than what it calls for and check the level. Then add more if needed. Always easier to add than remove. I always measure exactly what I drain out and add only that amount initially. Then I add more if the digital guage calls for it.
One thing I have noticed is that the car will go from saying it's under to over max as it's driven. It never stays in one spot.

Letting oil out gradually from the sump plug is like trying to let air out gradually from a balloon with a pin ***** -- it's gonna be all or nothing. Might as well plan on a complete dump and refill.

If it's the plastic drain plug similar to the W214 M256 engine then no, it's not hard to modulate the flow. Just a small turn will let it trickle out. I drained about 200ml from mine without an issue or mess. In fact, when you fully drain for an oil change I've learned to open it half way to let it slowly drain before taking it completely out for it to fully drain. If you take the plug out with the pan full of oil it will come out with so much force to splash everywhere.
