Hi
I seem to have a problem with my brake pedal
when i get in car to start the pedal is really hard to push down !
This gets easier as I'm driving .. I also have a sqeak
coming from brakes when I'm braking
Had pads changed last August so still ok

When the brakes quit working properly, it turns the brake pedal, into a break pedal.

My wife's E does the same thing. It took us quite a while to determine the pressure on the pedal made a difference between being able to start or not. She sometimes goes a week without driving it, and I noticed the pedal was very stiff until started. My guess is that it loses some boost pressure after sitting, and the pedal expects more movement to detect that you're depressing it.

I queried the Service Advisor just yesterday. He dismissed my observation, told me the key was probably low on battery. It reminded me why I don't like this particular advisor.

What does the battery in the key have to do with the brake pedal pressure?

The Service Advisor completely dismissed the connection to the brake pedal (assuming it was "just a coincidence" despite being the only way to reliably get it to start), but instead repeated the usual reasons for non-starting: either the key has "fallen asleep" and needs to be woken by pressing a button (it apparently does this to save battery when the key isn't in the car), or the battery in the key is low and the car cannot communicate with it to enable the engine start.

Perhaps also check the vacuum check valve, that affects the pressure required to push the brake pedal as well. That said, with vehicle off, the vacuum pump is not running anyways so probably not it.
