W213 Rattles - UGH

Hello.

I have a 2020 E63 but I am sure this applies to all W213 vehicles.
Anyone else experience rattles? I have read the other various threads on rattles, but nothing seems to be what I am experiencing.

1. Steering wheel rattle, over very harsh bumps/uneven roads something appears to rattle underneath the steering wheel.
2. Rattle near the rear of the vehicle, almost certain it is the headliner behind the rear pano roof (see attached video).

Anyone else experiencing these / have remedies?

Thanks,

yep, had the headliner rattle among several other rattles. in my 2022 e450 since I got it. Took it in for service and they told me there was a clip missing so they replaced it. I asked them if the old clip broke or something and they told me there were no broken clips anywhere and they couldn’t find the old one so they think the factory forgot to install that clip.

my passenger side headrest also rattles like crazy. The dealer ordered a new headrest, but apparently it’s been on back order and I’ve been waiting now for 5 or 6 months. Unbelievable I can’t get a part for a 3 year old car

so much for Mercedes quality. I’ve had more rattles in this car than any other car I’ve ever owned. It’s junk

At least the interior looks good and nicely designed. If that makes you feel better.

I wish it did, but after spending 160+ days and multiple trips to the dealer to fix various issues, the only thing that will make me feel better is Mercedes going out of business given how poorly made these cars are and how bad 4 of the 5 dealers I've been to have been to work with.

So their solution was to put felt tape around the trim pieces?

For the roof rattle, they dropped the headliner and put the missing clip in where it was supposed to go.

For the rattle in the heads up display, they added felt...twice.

For the rattling A/C blend door, they used felt tape somewhere.

For the rattling and creaking sunroof, they cleaned the seals and adjusted something.

For the creaking driver seat, they had to replace a seat bracket, and ended up putting a hole in my driver door panel when removing the seat, and didn't reconnect the massage seat properly. Took 2 additional dealer visits and an additional 3 weeks to get the massage seat working again after that ordeal

For the rattling plastic piece where the sunroof button and sunglasses holder is, they used more felt tape.

For the rattling passenger headrest, they need to replace the headrest but I've been waiting for months for the part.

For the rattle coming from somewhere in or near the driver door, they haven't been able to figure out what was causing that after two visits, and its getting a lot worse

Is the roof fixed? Or the made it loose and made it rattle more

The HUD, so twice but did it fix it?

Felt tape again, hopefully it did the trick?

Yay so the roof is fixed?

Oh no for the seat, fixing something is one thing, breaking another is another.

Sunglass holder is a common rattle yup I heard that a lot, so they fixed it?

Yup headrest rattle that is another common one.

Hmmm rattle driver door, could it be the seatbelt holder? Or is it a trim piece?

In my E53 it came with the option for silent interior upgrade. For me, I can't hardly hear my exhaust or people outside even if someone comes up to my window and starts talking.

Is that basically the sound insulation glass or something beyond that?

Sorry, I meant to say silent interior and correct, thicker glass and sound absorbing material all through the car.

I wonder if its the same as the Pinnacle trim on the W214. It comes with sound and heat insulated glass. All the doors and body have sound insulation as standard. One of the reasons the W214 is much quieter then prior models.

Yes it might indeed be but MB didn't include those trims until the W223 right? The trim lines (pinnacle trim, executive, etc.)?

In Canada, it is called acoustic sound package or something I can't remember the name, the best way is to compare the option code via VIN data card to determine if it is the same thing just called differently.

I think the pinnacle trim is more of a "today's word" for the package add on.
Since my car is a 2022 I think it came packaged with the soft door closing from what I remember on the list but I'd have to check. If I'm just sitting at a light, I can't hear any other car with the windows up, in fact even people with exhaust sound muffled.

If you are not scared to take things apart in your car, then place felt tape to help with rattle or turn up the music.

Yes, the roof is fixed, the HUD is fixed. no the sunglasses holder is not fixed, and the headrest is on backorder with no ETA on the part availability. The driver door one is either towards the front of the driver door or on the left side of the dashboard, I can't tell. It's not the seatbelt holder it's more towards the front of the car.

Luckily enough, my passenger side axle seal failed for the second time, so I have an appointment to bring the car in for service again next week. I will have them address the rattles when I bring it to get the leak fixed

Yes on the 213 it was called Acoustic comfort package and included double pane windows, additional sound deadening, and glass that reflects heat. I have this package on my E450 and it's excellent. I also have a similar package on my BMW x5, but on the BMW it is only sound isolation, no heat insulation. You really feel the difference between the two, with the X5 heating up in the sun much quicker and you feel the sun hit you while your driving vs .the E450 where you don't really feel the heat when the sun is beating into the car

Yes that seems to be the case, MB introduced trim lines as well. Very annoying as those trim lines mean if you want something you can't get it unless you choose another trim line. Basically, you buy the vehicle how MB wants you to buy it and not how you want to buy it. I assume they did this because lots of people lease and it is easier to sell afterwards.

Seems like we are making slow steady progress, as for the headrest, annoying it is on backorder with no ETA.

Oh no, not a failing seal.

quick update here

Mercedes confirmed the front axle seal failed for the second time in 1.5 years. They replaced it.

They replaced the overhead console to address the rattle near the sunglasses holder.

they have had the car for 2.5 weeks now and can’t figure out what the rattle is to the front of the driver. I think it’s from the dashboard but they are convinced it’s a suspension issue. So far they have changed the control arm and an anti swat bar bushing. Neither resolved the issue. Now they think it’s the strut, so they ordered a new strut which will take them a few weeks to get from Germany. No idea when I’ll get my car back or whether the strut will address the rattle.

complete garbage car
