80,000 mile service

I have the 80,000 mile service coming up on my 2019 E300 4matic.

My mechanic has suggested the following

oil and filter service
spark plug service
brake fluid service
transmission service
differential service
transfer case service
coolant service

I know it won’t be cheap but I want to keep my car a long time so I want to keep up on the maintenance.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to something else that needs to be done?

Other than typical visual inspections, the 80K miles/8 year service is just an oil and filter change, engine air and cabin air filter change, and brake fluid change. Honestly, the brake fluid change interval (every 2 years/20K miles) is a bit ridiculous. I bought my car (2017 E400 wagon) used with 51K miles on it in December 2023. The brake fluid was changed at the 40K mile service in 2021. I had them skip it at the 60K mile service (May 2024). Will do it again at the 80K mile service.

I changed my plugs at the 70K mile mark. I also did the transmission fluid/filter/pan change at 70K miles. M-B says the transmission and transfer case doesn't require changing unless there's a problem. I will do the transfer case at the 80K mile service.

What he said

I believe that your mechanic is correct.

fortunately, cheap technology makes checking the brake fluid condition easy these days. Buy a little tester for under $20 and you can monitor whether or not the fluid has moisture in it. Since every car lives in a different environment, some cars may do better than others, but the little tester will tell you the answer.

Good point. I drive my car but if someone doesn't put a decent amount of miles per year on their car, the interval might need to be at lower mileage levels. Honestly, it's just as much about time as it is miles.

Honestly, driving your own car, one can feel the difference when there is moisture in the brake fluid. The brakes will feel spongy or soft when pressed. I live in NE and I change my brake fluids every 2-3 years, I can feel a bit of improvement after the service, especially when I brake my car hard.

when did you flush the brake fluid last time? Ideally they should be replaced based on time, not mileage. 2 year interval is recommended but I do it every 2-3 years when I have the mood.

All of the items you listed are important for 80K, especially any of those never been done. And they can be all done by yourself. Transmission fluid may be tricky so get mechanics to do it. Other fluid, like oil, TC fluid, diff fluid - they are just drain and fill.
