I won't buy a Merc e class. These are highly unreliable and unsafe cars. They look the best, but they aren't the best!

I've been driving MB's since 1959. I've never had a reliability issue with an E class. The S class is another matter.

To each his own.

See to believe the lemon of e class

Here you go. E class lemons. The biggest issue is the wait time for servicing!! 3 weeks plus before they see and a week plus after that before they touch and diag!! How atrocious is Merc USA!!

That's New Jersey, a place I've never been to and where I never will.
I've never waited more than a day for MB service.

Back on topic. I really like the sleek look of the wagon. Too bad that it isn't sold in the North American market.
All we get is the ugly All Terrain with the extra black cladding.

The E-class has been regarded as one of the most reliable car in Europe for decades and has been referred as the "Taxi car"

Is the exclusive line (the one with the new grille) only available in Europe and not in the U.S.?

Some provisional thoughts on the pros and cons of the 2024 E-class vs. 5 series.

Engine - The inline 6 of the 5 series is maybe the best 6 cylinder engine ever made. The E's inline 6 is fine but no one can touch the power and smoothness of the BMW 6 cylinder.

Exterior - The new 5 series is simply horrible. There's really no other way to describe it. It lacks the fluidity and grace of the outgoing G60 and the number "5" molded into the C pillar is childish and would be more at home on a Subaru or Nissan. I really wanted to love the redesign of the 5 but it's abysmal. The E is, by contrast, fluid and graceful and, I think, will age well. The taillights on the new E are idiotic with the three pointed star being used as taillights. A rather immature decision on the part of MB IMO. But, absent this, a timeless and elegant exterior design.

Interior - Aesthetically the new E is gorgeous with plenty of great tech (probably too much in many cases like the inclusion of a selfie camera for doing zoom meetings I guess and some really silly childish video games) that seems quite well implemented. A couple of quibbles here. As in the past, the center transmission tunnel is too wide and intrudes on passenger foot room. And there are some cheap looking and feeling plastic pieces that don't belong on a car of this class.

Seat comfort - Long a BMW weak point, the front seats of the E have always been superb and I expect nothing less in this newest version. Seat comfort in the BMW is just OK and really should be quite a bit better.

Driving dynamics - BMW has justifiably ruled this area for some time. The 5 drives very, very nicely and imparts a fair amount of excitement. Not as agile or responsive as a 3 series to be sure, but damn good for a car of its size and weight. We'll see about the new E but I doubt it'll offer the driving experience of the 5.

Reliability - Both quite good though the BMW clearly has a bit of an edge here. As I buy my cars and drive them for 5-6 years, this is an important factor that weighs toward the BMW. Thankfully the MB has good reliability, just not quite on a par with the BMW.

Safety - Both superb

I'm going to be getting the E450. My question is does this come standard with the embedded Mercedes logo in the grill or does it come with the rather plain looking grill with the stand-up Mercedes chrome piece attached to the hood? I prefer the grill with the embedded logo but I don't want a sport suspension or low profile tires.

Also, are RFT's available for the car? I don't love them as tires per se, but they've saved my behind more than once over the last 10 years.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

AMG-Line is standard in the US, meaning there is no availability of the luxury-line grill with a hood ornament. It will have the MB logo in the grill, surrounded by mini stars.

Agreed with most of your points except for this one.

Coming from a G30 (2017) with multi-contour seats, the BMW seats are significantly more comfortable than the multi contour on my 2022 E450. BMW offers several seating options, though, and the base/sport seats are not very good. Do you know which seats you tried?

Many of the reviews are saying that the multi-function comfort seats in the G60 5 series are a lot better than the seats in the E450. Autogefuel has said in several Mercedes reviews that Mercedes used to have the best seat comfort but BMW and Audi are doing much better in this area compared to Mercedes newest generation.

If anyone is interested, I formed a FB group for the W214. All are welcome to join. 🙂

Thanks for your response. I do have the multi-comfort seats in the G30 and I'd say they're just OK. And while I haven't yet had the opportunity to actually sit in the W214, I've always found MB front seats to be almost perfect. Again, I recognize that this is something that's likely to be highly subjective.

I've had both BMW 5 Series and MB E Class vehicles and the MB seats are much less comfortable due to them being much firmer. Depending on one's driving stlye that can be a positive or negative trait.

As a current owner of both the BMW 535 xi and E450, I must disagree that the BMW i-6 is smoother and better than the MB v6. For context, I owned a E60 2007 535xi (~6 years; traded in for a F10) and currently a F10 2011 535xi (~10 years; bought off-lease in Dec 2013), and an off-lease (purchased Dec 2022) W213 2020 E450, hence my comments are based on true ownership.

Let me just bottom-line it here. The F10 will be my very LAST BMW car ever. Never going back to BMW again. At under 40K miles, the F10 needed a head gasket change ($1400)... now at ~150K miles, it needs another head gasket change (~$5000 quote from dealer). As a comparison, my SLK350 with the 3.5L V6 engine is at 120K miles and has ZERO engine issue after 10 years of ownership, and remains smooth and strong... in fact, drives like new despite the high mileage. The 2020 E450 motor is sublime smooth when compared to the F10 inline-6. Don't get me wrong, the BMW is a very competent and solid motor, legendary even, but I will not agree it is better than the MB 6 in the E... not in my books... sorry.

Wow, high praise for the MB V-6. Inline 6's are always going to be smoother and more well balanced than V6's so the newer MB inline 6 should be a worthy competitor to the legendary I6 in the BMW. Sorry to hear of the reliability issues you experienced with your 5 series. I owned the F10 and now the G30, each for over 6 years and both were virtually trouble free throughout. And while our anecdotal experiences are certainly valid, the aggregated experiences of 10's of thousands of owners are what really count. With this in mind the reliability record of BMW's is clearly superior to that of MB. Mind you, MB is not bad, it's simply that BMW is better.

The real data.

BMW = Bring Mechanic With

BMWs are great when they receive overwhelming amounts of TLC. My experience is that every BMW I've owned needed more TLC than every MB I've owned.

Yeah, looks like our ownership experience are different.... but I do agree with you that an aggregated (statistical) data of thousands of owners is far better than individual small-sampled anecdotes, however its not like these "reliability dependability data" are not subject to other interpretations and nuances. Cars with high end electronic nannies and gadgetry will have "more problems" should not surprise. Some owners expect perfection when they pay high prices for their high-end automobiles, and hence are quick to complain if something goes wrong... not that many of these complaints aren't worthwhile, they just need context. It is a truism that only owners with issues complain, and they often represent a far smaller chunk of all owners... but their voices are often louder than those of owners with no issues...

oh well. I won't stick for any car manufacturer since they are in the biz to make money. I just want to enjoy the ones I put my hard-earned $$ on.

as for the W214, I am still on the fence on the design and other cheapy stuff I see in the vids and pics... and hence will wait awhile before looking to acquire one.

I take JD Powers with a grain of salt:

Look at the ratings with Mini, Honda and GMC are above average and Honda, Infiniti, Acura and Subaru below average!
