Recall for black screen fix.

Today I took my car to service and was told there's a recent recall (came out last week or so) to update software to adress black screen, headlight projector, and several other issues (I provided a long list when making the appointment). If these are something bothering you, maybe worth trying it out.

Got a GLC hybrid as the loaner, but it refused to start in the evening when I came back from work. Ran with the motors and the engine started on my way home, few miles away from my office. What an adventure!

I'm not seeing any info on this on the NHTSA web site. Last recall for the W214 is last September for an issue affecting emergency braking on some 2024 E and CLE models. I see a couple complaints but no actual recall. Some times it takes awhile for it to appear on NHTSA so if it's fresh news it may not show up yet.

Did you get any further info about the recall like the campaign number?

Please have a look at your work order and let us know if the recall campaign numbers are there under LINE OP CODE or somewhere else on your work order/invoice from service.

Not yet, but I guess I will get it when I pick up my car in one or two weeks.

There is no recall. If you are having the black screen problem bring it to the dealer and it will be fixed. Had mine done a month and a half ago and no further problems.

Is there at least a software version or software bulletin/XENTRY Tips document? What was the name of the module updated?

What was the timeline, meaning how long did it take them to fix your car? I have been in my intermittent screen drama for the last 6 weeks.

Takes a few hours for that update. They gave me a loaner when I did that screen issue update.

Just got my car back. There are two recalls performed:
  • 2024090014: electronic ignition lock control unit software.
  • 2024090016: update control unit software and perform SCN coding.
I think the second one is targeted at the MBUX issues, including black screen. ChatGPT told me these were Mercedes internal recall numbers, but it couldn't figure out the corresponding NHTSA recall numbers. I had been checking recall information using my VIN number now and then, but I haven't noticed any recalls, and I can't find any NHTSA listed recalls doing the same for my car (2024 E450) - correct me if I missed. So I'm quite curious about these "recalls. They are supposed to be mandatory, but I got them just because I happened to check in?

For the first one: https://www.nhtsa.gov/?nhtsaId=11008081
Second one is not searchable perhaps still something new.

This makes sense (kudos to ChatGPT):

------------------------Mercedes-Benz internal recalls (often identified by numbers like 2024090014, 2024090016, etc.) may not always be mandatory in the same way as government-issued safety recalls. Whether they are mandatory depends on their classification:
  1. Safety Recalls (Government-Mandated)
    • Issued by regulatory agencies like the NHTSA (U.S.), KBA (Germany), or Transport Canada for safety defects or regulatory non-compliance.
    • Mandatory for the manufacturer to fix free of charge.
    • Not legally required for the owner to comply, but strongly recommended due to safety risks.
  2. Service Campaigns (Internal Recalls)
    • Issued voluntarily by Mercedes-Benz to address non-safety-related defects (e.g., software updates, minor component issues).
    • Not legally mandatory, but Mercedes may require it to maintain warranty coverage.
    • Often performed when the vehicle is brought in for regular service.
To determine if a recall is mandatory for your vehicle, check:
  • The NHTSA website (nhtsa.gov/recalls) – if it's listed, it's a safety recall.
  • The Mercedes-Benz Recall Lookup (mbusa.com/recall) – to see if your VIN is affected.
  • Your dealership – they can clarify if the recall affects your warranty or vehicle performance.
If your vehicle is subject to an internal Mercedes-Benz recall, it's advisable (but not legally required) to have it completed to ensure optimal performance and avoid potential future issues.
------------------------

Mercedes didn't list these two recalls on their website, so you will have to visit a dealership to figure out, I guess.

Ya that is one way to find out but since now that you provided forum members the numbers they should get it updated right away because this issue is really annoying and potentially a safety issue.

This one was from 09/2024 and I didn't get it early. No notifications from dealer/in the app/VIN check at all!

For that first one: https://www.nhtsa.gov/?nhtsaId=11008081 Update Electronic Ignition Lock Control Unit Software.....

Does anyone know what the symptoms would be? Is it just the car not starting? I had a strange occurrence the other day when I approached my car in the garage. For some reason the LED lights around the door handles did not light up like they usually do when they extend. I got inside the car and the brake pedal was completely stiff when I tried to press it. I pressed it as hard as I could to start the car and it worked, but I was just wondering if maybe this was a symptom of that first Service Campaign mentioned above. My car is an April 2024 build.

I don't know about the lights on the door handles not lighting but I experience the same hard brake peddle upon cold starting in the morning. You don't have to press very hard to allow the starter to activate. It feels to me that it might have something to do with the parking brake being set automatically. It never occurs after the first cold start of the day. I don't know if the LED lights around the door handle are light sensitive. I doubt it but worth investigation. Good luck and Happy Motoring.

Sounds like the brakes lost vacuum for some reason, I mean this is similar to when the engine is off and you kept on pumping the brakes until there is no vacuum.

I don't see the brake feeling hard is an issue. Mine does the same and it's a 2025 MY with a July 2024 build. You don't need to push hard at all on the brake to start it. Just a slight bit of pressure is all that is needed.

I think the door handles are light sensitive as it makes no sense to have them light up in bright sunlight. Was it during the day?

No, this was inside my garage and they always light up in my garage except for that one time. I agree, I believe the handles are light sensitive because I don't see them light up outdoors during the daytime. The brake pedal was unusually stiff compared to every other time I've tried to start the car. It's only happened once so far, so hopefully it was just a random glitch.
