Crazy part prices at local dealership.

Just quoted on some parts from my local dealership and here are what I got:
Engine oil filter: $37
Drain plug: $26
Dust filter: $54
Cabin air filter: $90
Engine air filter: $106
Didn't quote on services but very likely I'll shop online and do it myself or go somewhere else.

I have a 2019 E450. All of the above, except for the drain plug which I do not have to replace, I purchased on Amazon for at least 50% to 70% less..

If you are going to do it yourself check out FCPEuro and compare the prices, they should be cheaper than what service charges at the dealership. I replaced the brakes and rotors on my S60 from FCP back in 2021 rather than taking it to the dealer and saved myself a good $200.
There are also eBay and other websites where you can buy genuine parts or even parts from the manufacturer. Interested to hear what you find because my local dealership charges an astonishing $600 for Service A which without a prepaid maintenance plan can be hefty after 3yrs of service intervals A/B.

For the "A" service, my dealer offers an "Express Service": it takes less than an hour, you wait for your car and the cost is $225 with coupons.

Never heard of the "A" service which is an oil and filter change, plus inspections costing $600. If that is what your dealer is charging, I would RUN not walk from the dealer!

Oh I agree, my local dealer bends people over with the service A/B costs.
If I have some free time, I will reach out to the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Dealer in Manhattan to inquire about their pricing for comparison. However, I opted for the prepaid maintenance plan to avoid the inconvenience of traveling a long distance to a dealership and back home for a simple routine service.

Just to put a fine point on it, does express service qualify as an 'A' service, as there are no inspections? If something fails during warranty and it was not previously inspected could they say if we had inspected it would not have reached the point of failure? May be better to go to an independent shop to save money for a full a service?

I leave to you whether when the "A" service is done, if besides changing the oil + filter and topping off fluids anything else is done.

The link I posted indicates a "full A Service" and the time 60 minutes. This is my dealer's express service.

If something fails during warranty it is covered. No inspections are required for the warranty to be in effect.

Very often, when people pay extra to a dealer to change the oil + filter, to justify in their minds the extra cost, they rationalize "what if?" situations.

Keep in mind the person doing the "A service" is not your usual certified mechanic. It is someone the dealer employees, at a much lower hourly dollar rate, to change the oil + filter. My dealer also washes the car which is done by someone else. The express service does not require a loaner, a big savings to the dealer.

Dealers make 80% of their profits in the service bay and at the parts counter. There are plenty of online sources for genuine MB parts and aftermarket brands (some which are MB OE suppliers, such as Mann and Hengst) that sell at substantial discounts to dealer prices. My DIY oil change cost is about $70 for 10 qts of oil + filter.

I agree 100%. For my 2019 E450 I use an extractor. My cost of an oil change is $11 for the filter plus $35 for 7 quarts of Mobil 1 oil from either Costco or Walmart.

For the W214, no dipstick so you cannot use an extractor, you will have to drain the oil. So add in another $15 for a new drain plug

My drain plug is steel, so all I do is replace the copper crush washer that I buy on Amazon by the dozen for less than $1/ea. (but I keep a spare M14-1.5 drain plug on-hand just in case - about $5 at most auto stores). I have no dip stick either, but my filter is on the engine bottom so I have to slide under there anyway. Told my kids when I can no longer change my own oil, they can ask for the car keys. With drive-on Rhino-Ramps, it takes about 45 minutes without rushing (not rushing becomes easier every year).

The W214 switched to plastic drain plugs though I think : (

You are correct. They should be replaced with every oil change.

Yes, I purchased a lot from FCPEURO when I owned a XC60 until last year. I definitely saved more than $200 for replacing the brakes/rotors myself (My local Volvo dealer tried to charge $100 for replacing a plate bulb - what a place I live in! ). I still have one extra filter left that I hadn't put it in before I replaced the car.

I had bad experience with another Ralley but Ralley MB doesn't sound bad. The engine oil alone would cost more than $100 (for DIY) if they use 229.52.

That's a good point of contact. I quoted from them when I was buying the car. Not deeply discounted but definitely better than my local guys. If doing service there the congestion relief fee should be considered.

I found some stainless steel / magnetic drain plugs, but for E350 only. It makes more sense to replace the washer only each time.

Ideally, we can get one that has a petcock so that we can just turn it to drain and not actually remove the plug.

Yes, actually I found one for my wife's car, but I decided no-go as the valve doesn't look strong enough.

Yeah, strength would be important. Don't want leaks and don't want the valve opening over time due to vibrations or heat. I've seen reviews of cheaper non-oem plastic plugs that had a small leak. Sometimes it's just best to go with the real deal for peace of mind rather than to save a few bucks.

What is it about the plastic drain plug that requires its replacement? Is it just the o-ring? The filter cannisters are plastic also, but replacing its two o-rings is all that's required. Just curious.

I don't know, but it is recommended by MB for every oil change. On my first change at just over 700 miles, I kept the original plastic drain plug. I inspected it and it seemed perfectly fine. I had a replacement but decided not to use it. I changed oil again at 5K miles and even though it looked fine, I did replace it with a new one. I didn't notice any leaks from using the same plug and the plastic shield under the car was perfectly clean. I'll likely change it again as it's not that expensive, but I'm not sure why MB recommends it. Maybe the plastic stretches from repeated removal. Maybe I'll measure the original and current one with calipers and compare against a new one to see if anything is different. The pan is plastic too so if it stretches you would think the drain hole threads also stretch.
