Stat/Stop or Not ?

My model is a New combustion E200 ,
in start-stop mode while driving, ( Economy mode ) when I do not press the gas pedal, I notice that the rpm meter drops to 0, which means that the engine probably stops working temporarily.
When I press the gas pedal again, the engine starts again and the rpm meter rises to the level it was before. This process supposedly saves fuel, but doesn't it overload the system and create accelerated wear? Alternatively, will it be better to disable the start-stop and prevent engine wear at the expense of increased fuel consumption.

No, modern auto start-stop systems do not accelerate wear. The motors are designed with stronger components like reinforced starters and bearings, and are only activated when the engine is already warm and running. These are built to handle frequent start-stop cycles, and the consensus among engineers is that they actually help to reduce wear by minimizing long periods of idling.

.

The only danger is that the engine will stop when one is paused in the middle of an intersection awaiting a left turn and not instantly restart. It happened to me in my '18 E300. Cross traffic left me stranded in the middle of the intersection waiting for a green light. That may not be an issue with a W214 with electric boost. Above is a common intersection with 12 lane roads (6 lanes each direction) intersecting.

Opinions on this are split -- I have no evidence proving or disproving wear effects. I just find this feature annoying and of substantially no benefit to my driving. I've disabled auto s/s on my two cars that have it.

I have no problem with it on my E450 and generally use the E mode where it shuts on and off all the time. I actually like it. I’d hate it in a 350 with the a/c shutting off at stops as it gets very hot in Texas where I live. I drove a loaner with the 2.0 engine and it sucked.

At the time this was introduced to the American market - I managed rotating electrical product for the automotive aftermarket. To the best of my recollection - only the cycle times of the starter was improved.

BenzNinja has recoded all my MBs to last setting and the function has been off ever since.

I personally switch off the Auto Start/Stop, when I get out of my garage. I do that with all of my cars, except for the one with the manual transmission, which does not have it, due to obvious reasons.
