Cooling System Malfunction message

Went to an appointment today and everything was fine. When I started my 2025 E450 after the appointment I got a yellow engine indicator light (CEL type). When I went to messages, it said “Cooling System Malfunction.” I didn’t notice it at first but soon after at a stop I realized a very loud continuous sound from under the hood. It seems like the cooling fan is revving at highest speed. The temperature gauge did not go above half way, but did fluctuate down and then back when idling at a light. Any advice? Will call dealer, but wondering if it is safe to drive the car there (about 15 miles) or request a tow. Outdoor temperatures are below freezing. I don’t want to burn the fan out.

Thanks!

I got that message the first day I drove the car on a trip back to our home 800 miles away. I did not get any unusual noises, however. I pulled over, turned off the car and waited a few minutes. I restarted the car and the error message did not reappear. So far, it has not returned. 🤞. Good luck with your issue.

Hi, I had this same issue. After the cooling system malfunction error popped up, the radiator fan kept running at max speed. When I took it to the dealer they told me that one of the temperature sensors had failed due to water leaking into the sensor. Once they replaced the sensor, it fixed the issue

2025 E53 here and I had that message a month after buying the car. Went away after shut down and it never came back. Had the CEL a couple of times but by the time I took it to the dealer the light went away. Dealer told me not to worry about it if the light turns off by itself.
