The EQA is similar to the EQC platform-wise and not on a dedicated EV platform like the upcoming EQS and EQE.
Manufacturers can't keep up with EV manufacturing in Germany as those cars are flying off the shelves there (the German government offers subsidies for EV sales). This car will sell well there as it is priced the same as the GLA 200 (post subsidy).
Interesting is that other car manufacturers are moving more EV's than anticipated. VW 2020 EV sales are already 50% of Tesla volume within 1 year. Even Audi sold well over 40k E-Trons and Porsche sold 20,000 Taycans, making it the best selling non-SUV Porsche

Some interesting stats there. I suppose some people will buy a Mercedes regardless. Nonetheless I find it surprising. The Volvo has 400hp, AWD for the same price, and while subjective, I would say it is a little nicer. The Tesla though is on another level. I drove the $60k Model Y Performance earlier this week and was very impressed. Drives better than my $218k Porsche Panamera.
So these cars will be quite cost effective.
Like you, we have been eager to get an EV for years. So far there were zero options besides Tesla. Love how it drove but disliked the seats and interiors, poor build quality and aging design (Model S). But the Model S is a bargain for what it offers. Not a fan of the look of the Model 3/Y. I hope the Germans finally get their act together and wish that the EQS will resemble the Vision just a bit. Love that car!
Really would like to stay with a major manufacturer (like MB etc) so that the car doesn't go out of commission for months due to unavailable parts in case of accident or repair. For that reason I am not looking at Lucid.

I think the car is simply geared toward the European market and priced that way. Problem with pricing is that many just grab a calculator and experience sticker shock. This can't be compared with US prices. Can't apply exchange rates, 16% VAT (reduced due to COVID) is already included and there are heavy subsidies for EV's right now. That base car sits at 38k Euros with VAT included after rebates. If used for business, VAT can be excluded. The lease rate for these will likely have a negative interest rate.
So these cars will be quite cost effective.
