Mercedes achieves Level 3 Automation... are our vehicles already obsolete?

Would be kinda crappy to get the first gen of this car, dealing with its many bugs and now less than 4 months from getting the vehicle they have level 3 autonomous driving and you likely can't upgrade your current vehicle for that feature

Mine will not be obsolete since I keep them for many, many years and have absolutely no interest in using autonomous driving. By the time I get rid of my 580 SUV there will be flying cars….😊

That depends on whether you bought a car to drive or be driven in. You are correct that existing cars can't be upgraded. Level 3 requires a bunch of additional hardware. It's also very very limited. Currently only approved in Nevada and only on curated stretches of roads, and only below 37 mph. It's a ton of money for very little use. Kinda like paying thousands for Tesla full self driving and never actually getting what you paid for. Not sure why people are so eager for self driving cars. Take the bus maybe if you don't wanna drive? I do get the convivence, but Level 2 has all that w/o needing to be approved and having to drive on a curated stretch of road. It works everywhere at normal highway speeds, and not just in traffic congestion on approved roads.

I believe MB is targeting CA next and who knows if they will get all 50 states.
But if I had to deal with traffic often and it was available in my state there is no way I wouldn’t get this.
I just wonder how well it will do with aggressive road raging LA drivers, lol

If I lived in LA and had to deal with traffic on a daily basis I would absolutely want this.
I believe MB is targeting CA next and who knows if they will get all 50 states.

It's like using autopilot on a plane - many pilots love flying but trying to maintain an exact course, altitude, and speed can become quite fatiguing and not enjoyable. I love finding a curvy road to carve and hit apexs on a corner. But when there's medium traffic and I've already been in the car for 3 hours after a long day? I'd love to be able tu turn on autodrive, sit back, and be able to check email or at least just let my brain relax a little. I never stop paying attention when using any sort of adaptive cruise/auto steering. It just changes my brain from worker to manager mode, uses a different part of the brain.

As for current driving assists, also agree. It takes the micromanagement out and lets me pay more attention to the traffic around me.

Even if this was available, I don't think I would pay the extra $8k to option it. I like steering my car and the adaptive cruise works very well on highways.

The fact that level 3 automation is only functional up to 40 mph makes it almost pointless. And until it’s available in most States and works at all Highway speeds, it’s just not a good value, at least for me.

Now if the OTA update that was promised was a real thing with MB then you would think that the EQS will get this when it becomes available.
But my guess is that with MB being a legacy automaker, this new feature will be locked to the 2024 EQS SUV and sedans only.

It doesn't quite do that, but the current system can change lanes automatically, you just have to activate the indicator when you want it to change lanes and then it does it. Provided you have that turned on in the settings. It will also start slowing down for the exit, turns etc. if you have the route based speed adaptation turned on. It doesn't automatically turn onto the exit, or automatically steer the car at an intersection onto the correct road, but it does slow the car down to prepare it for the maneuver.
