Sorry to say, but we're not going to "appreciate" combustion engines more... because they're going away. You're not going to see a change of heart from governments or car makers. So long as you live long enough, it'll just be a question of when you give up your combustion engine cars for EVs, not if.

EVs are cleaner (yes, even on 'dirty' power grids), quieter, easier to maintain and, importantly for people like you, faster. You might swear you'll hold on to your AMG to the bitter end, but you might change your tune when someone in a mid-range electric sedan blasts past you in a green light drag race. Yeah, the charging infrastructure and speed is an issue, but those will get better, just as range and performance have gotten better.

(There's also some misinformation about the definition of climate change, volcanoes and human impact, but that's a debate that doesn't belong in a car forum.)

I think it is wonderful that you and others will be buying into this new technology. By doing so, you'll be keeping the economy strong and as I stated when I started this thread, while all the EVs will be stuck at charging stations, traffic congestion will be reduced and the demand for gasoline will be reduced so that I can continue to enjoy the sound and pleasure of driving my V8s and AMGs. (BTW -- on you EV will you add the option that adds an audio system and an external speaker so that your EV will sound like a real car and not a sewing machine?)

At age 76, with my professional racing days gone by and having driven on almost all the major road course tracks in the US, I'll be pleased to just keep my AMG and ICEs for as long as I live and I might even find another in future years. Drag races at stoplights are boring and "childish" as my wife likes to say. Been there, done that (11.8s in my stock CLS63S.)

Yes (as I admitted in strict confidence earlier -- please don't embarrass me by disclosing this ), I might someday have an EV for in-town errands but for travel throughout the western US, an EV SUV is the last thing I need.

Fossil fuels will be required to run the overloaded grid. And thankfully we humans have figured out how to extract them from this earth to raise the standard of living of every human being by burning the fuel whether it be to power our factories, lights, ovens, cars and planes. If EVs can help reduce carbon emissions, great. But remember that the climate has been warming for the past 13,000 years when the last ice age ended. (There were fewer than a handful of ICEs back then.) I believe that ICEs in the USA are down in the noise. We need China and India to get on board. China is opening a new coal-fired power plant every day:
https://globalenergymonitor.org/wp-c...evelopment.pdf

BTW -- wait for the outcry from climate change zealots when some graduate student at MIT does a scientific evaluation of the effect on climate of taking all that energy out of the wind to run our vehicles. And how 'bout taking energy from the earth's surface with solar panels to run our vehicles? Who knows? Maybe that helps cool the earth. Hmm. Let's all go back to the dark ages and wait for the next solar cycle to cause the next ice age when we will all wish that we would have warmed the earth.

And OK -- I'll quit trolling. Please carry on...Bye.

Yes, it's likely a matter of time, but the big elephant in the room with performance is energy density, and there isn't anything big on the horizon at the moment to improve that. Use all that performance constantly and the battery will be empty quickly. Battery electric works for most cars, because most of them sit around parked most of the time, and are driven very little and when they are driven only a fraction of the power they offer is actually used, so the range they offer is sufficient when driven normally. Try to take one of them for a fun and fast 250+ mile canyon loop like I do frequently and you won't make it. This is why in sectors where power demands are higher and the vehicles are used longer, like construction equipment for example, they are actually looking at hydrogen combustion engines. JCB for example has a hydrogen combustion engine that offers the same performance and operating parameters as their diesel engines, because if they used battery electric the weight of the construction equipment would something like tripple in order to have enough charge to run for an entire shift and it would be prohibitively expensive. I wouldn't rule out hydrogen combustion engines in performance cars for customers who want to use them for more than occasionally showing off to their friends.

At age 62, my next vehicle will likely be an EV (the EQS SUV is high on my list to evaluate) but if the crop of available EV's at that time don't check enough boxes, I'll buy another ICE SUV. Something I would like about owning an EV is no more hot engine making my entire garage feel like a sauna. And I won't miss the noisy engine (we have a X7 with a V8) when I start up an EV. Things are changing quickly in the automotive world and the future of EV's looks promising. But if you prefer an ICE vehicle, it's your money. Buy whatever you like, but don't rain on the parades of those who want to move to an EV. It's their money.

But it isn't all their money. It is largely OUR money -- taxpayers in the USA who give money to the government to hand out in the form of "incentives" to buy and operate EVs. How many Tesla owners would have paid for the true cost of their vehicles without tax breaks? And then there's the infrastructure -- how many gas stations has the government built vs. how many charging stations exist and are planned in the future? (Gas stations are all built by private enterprise.) How much money do EVs pay into the Highway Trust Fund that builds and maintains the roadways on which EVs operate? Hopefully that will change. Enjoy it while you can. Please quit making comments that require me to address.

I am kind of looking forward to the SL73 and what forum they decide it should go under.... AMG, EV, other?

AS to JoeMA's point, A lot of EV owners will likely have something else in the garage, like a big beastly SUV.

With those generous government incentives and free use of the highways, I can't wait to buy a new EQS SUV and drive it all over America. Thanks @slk55er for doing your small part to fund my future.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I currently have a TESLA Model S and I just sold my S63 AMG. I plan to purchase an EQS and also a new Corvette Z06 when it comes out. Everything is not an intense battle between good and evil. I think its ok to like players for the Redskins and the Cowboys. Sometimes I vote for Republican candidates and sometimes I vote for Democratic candidates, it depends on if they share my views on issues important to me, not if they have a D or R after their name. Sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don't.

And one more thing, it is my money. The 7,000 in tax credit I received when I purchased my Model S is just a fraction of the 32% of my income I paid in taxes that year.

No higher than the rest of the folks on this thread discussing paying 150K+ for a car, I guess I'm just not smart enough to hire a good accountant.

You're absolutely correct. It's your money, buy whatever vehicle you like. I have a friend who purchased a Tesla Model Y several months ago. He lives in Florida and I live in PA but he was up to visit his family a few weeks back and had a chance to ride in his Model Y. I was more impressed than I though I would be. The Y rides higher than a sedan and is easier to get in and out of it. He has the performance edition and the ride was a little to firm for me but overall a very impressive EV. The simplistic interior was hard for me to overlook but he loves and thats all that matters. We currently own a 2019 BMW X7 with V8 and we love it so I'm not opposed to buying an ICE.

And you will be one of the few who will be able to provide a comprehensive review of the EQS compared to your Tesla Model S.

You just don’t get it! Everything made by Tesla is wonderful, the greatest, to die for. There is nothing better on the planet. No matter how weird it looks or how unconventional you need to want one. 😊
