I did a 24hr Turo rental in September of a Taycan 4S. Fantastic road dynamic and driving fun, but fundamentally a different type than EQS. For every day drive in traffic, bumpy roads with passengers.... go EQS. For occasional, weekend rubber-burning with significantly lower range (60% of EQS) go Taycan. Clearly Apples & Oranges.

You may want to wait until the following issue has been resolved or proven false (note that the source is an unknown writer at Teslarati) before buying a Taycan.

Any idea about the difference between Digital light USA versus Digital light ROW? Hope it isn't projected symbols changed to text like for some cluster icons (US versus Canada) but more like adapting to US style traffic signs?

I saw my first Taycan a few weeks ago in Palm Springs. This is after almost buying one on more than one occasion simply off the photos. Frankly, I was underwhelmed with its styling. It's odd how photos can either over or underplay a car's looks. Many say the EQS is much better looking in person (I agree). I guess, in this case, the Taycan is more photogenic than in person. And, shall we discuss the range....

From the earliest reactions to the EQS styling, I have simply ignored the negative jumps to judgement.
Different? Absolutely. That’s as far as I go. Especially the man on the street’s opinion of the appearance of my car. Life’s too short at 89+ to give any thoughts to that.

Digital Lights have multiple capabilities...
  1. Welcome show
  2. Automated High/Low Beam
  3. Display of safety information (pedestrians, construction, traffic signals...)
  4. Masking of lighting for other vehicles (in both directions)
  5. Smart fog lamps = changing intensity to maximize visibility

US vehicles should be getting 1/2/3 now and we might get 4/5 in next years as software update given the NTHSA has finally approved adaptive lighting capabilities. European and Canadian vehicles should have all features now.

I was more after the difference between US and other markets. We've had 1, 2, 4 and 5 in Europe already from about 2013 onwards, my pre-facelift V222 has those (ILS before multi-beam leds). Perhaps the difference between Europe and the US on Digital lights is point 3, we have that on the W223 from release as well as other models that offer the digital light option.

Digital Light involves an array of 1.3M pixels for each side enabling a major enhancement in the precision of the masking and of what can be overlayed on the road.

For...
2) that translates in hybrid high/low beams - high where OK / low elsewhere
3) New capability
4) Incredibly higher resolution of masking that keeps tracking the vehicles in front of you
5) New capability

See the attached video for examples of 2 & 4

Thanks. I've seen that video and I (think I) know what the European Digital light can do, the difference to the US version interests me.

Even on the youtube video marketing glorifies a bit the new lights. There is a difference to the "mechanical" ILS on my V222 compared to this W223 Digital light but less of difference to the later Multi-beam LEDs that we've had in our family, first the pre-facelift 213 and later the face lift W213. The two W213 multi-beams are similar, both with 84 pixels for masking the high beam for cars ahead and approaching cars. The guy on the video claims this masking to be more accurate than ever which is misleading. It is more accurate than the first generation mechanical approach but equal to the pre-facelift W213 (also facelift 222). The facelift 213 mainly has the additional high-range LED for auto-bahn driving.

The digital light part is basically "only" providing those projections, which include highlighting pedestrians on the road (I believe not much of a case for the US). Looking at the video, the light towards the car in front is not shaded any more accurately than the previous Multi-beam lights did, typically not even any more accurately than the ILS version did, the matrix LED is just capable for a more complex mask with multiple vehicles ahead.

Smart fox lights were also a part of head lights since the ILS approach (not for any ILS but the latest before multi-beams). At this point the light switch only had a rear fog light button, not one for the front and another for the rear fogs. Again something that has existed at least since early W222 cars.

EDIT: the topographical compensation of front beam levelling seems to come first with digital lights too? I have not seen it advertised with other MB headlights?

Doesn't bother me. The battery has an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty. Neither I nor the next owner would have any exposure there.

EQS ordered, 2018 GLS
What are your thoughts?

I have a reserved 450 to deliver next week with the black AMG exterior, RWY 21 inch wheels. I just found and was offered a black 580 without the AMG exterior and with the 20 inch wheels which was told came with the early production vehicles. I like the look of the 450 better as built but hard to pass up a 580 for only 7 k more than I am paying for my 450.

What is the typical time between a dealer accepting the $1k deposit and the factory issuing a purchase order for the car?

What an impossible question to answer!

How high is up!

Who could possibly know?

I find no facts saying “the Federal EV tax credits WILL expire”. It certainly could be modified but as far as I can see, it has not yet happened.

Can you provide a citation supporting your statement?

Those who are pushing for a change are, imo, highly unlikely to respond positively to pressure from MB, once again, imo.

Two issues may impact the EV tax Credit on EQS...

1) MSRP limit @ $80,000
2) Reduction of credit based on income $250K for single filer or $500K for joint filers

It has not passed as of yet. There is talk about making it through the Senate before Christmas. But, as of now, it remains the same. There's a couple of Democratic Senators (Manchin in particular) that will oppose it.

That was my understanding. Regardless, I don't think anyone is buying this particular vehicle because of it. However, it would be nice.

Does anyone have the ability to track a VIN number? Or, can you only see your own dealership?

Avilent,

Do you know why your toll tag option was removed? Was that an impediment to release of the vehicle. My EQS was produced in late October and still awaiting release for shipment due to software issues?

In Europe there is a web application that allows customers to follow their order through from order to delivery. Here in the US you have to call your dealer for any information.
