Dealer markup $25 to $50k

The negotiating began with the ordering process. The price is fixed in the contract. That is how I always order cars. To me there is no point ordering if I don't know what the price is.
Correction - The price is NOT fixed in the contract, but there is a ceiling and I have a no penalty 3 day walkaway clause inserted for when the car arrives. Most of what I buy is sight unseen.

I always use the same dealer as I have done since the 1970's. It pays to have an excellent relationship (purchases and services) with one dealer. They know that they are dealing for current as well as future business.

Again, anyone paying a "market" adjustment for a car is a fool. Any dealer that engages in such shenanigans is a dealer who will never get my business. MSRP is the most anyone will ever get out of me. MSRP is designed to give a dealer a more than healthy profit of a sale; around 10% for luxury brands.

Personally, I don't have an issue with it. I don't see how I can legitimately complain about the dealer taking advantage of market factors in their favor when I do that when those market factors are in my favor.

A negotiation is a strategic discussion that resolves an issue in a way that both parties find acceptable.
For me agreeing on a vehicle price always involves a negotiation.
Perhaps you just pay the asking price instead of negotiating.

If they just let you order one for MSRP, you "just paid the asking price". If they tried to tack on an ADM then that "long relationship" didn't stop them from trying to screw you.
And I negotiate contracts for a living, so yes obviously I always negotiate the price of a car. Negotiation is about leverage however, and if they can sell the car to someone else for more money than they can sell it to you for, you don't have any negotiating position.

The asking price was higher than the negotiated price including non-price benefits such as included service add-ons.
That being said, I purchase 1 or 2 cars from them every year for my extended family and have done so since the mid 1970's.

You have a bad attitude. As with any business, dealers want to maximize margin. Reputable dealers do not try to screw customers. If they did, they wouldn't be in business very long.

Dealers wonder why customers don’t have any loyalty, well they give them no reason to.
You confuse me. In one breath you say people who pay asking price are suckers, yet then you say I have a bad attitude because I don’t “recognize dealers try and have the biggest margin they can have”. Well, which is it? Should we try and negotiate as good a deal as we can or let the dealer have their margin? The only attitude I see here is your own.

I don’t have a bad attitude at all, I deal with this in my own business every day. If your dealer tried to charge you an ADM on a special order when you have been a loyal customer there for 50 years, they tried to screw you…sorry. Of course they try and maximize margin, but charging over full price for a product to a long time customer is short sighted. If they tried to do that to me and I had been as loyal as you, I would take my business elsewhere.

I don't know where you got the idea my dealer tried to charge more than MSRP. They didn't! I never said that they did.
In today's selling environment I started negotiating at 5% below MSRP. You seem to equate paying more than what you deem reasonable to being screwed. If one does not like a price they do not need to buy. A sale requires a willing purchaser and a willing seller.

So what you're saying is your dealer agreed to a price below MSRP for a new EQS order?
I don't consider paying more than I deem reasonable being screwed, I don't pay more than I deem is reasonable.

I got a dealer demo (entry level 580) for minimally above MSRP - my third car with them. If you look around, you will find dealers willing to sell at more reasonable prices. PM me if interested in a Midwest deal, I was quoted 3k above MSRP.

So what was it? Did they just let you order one for MSRP because of your long relationship or did they try and charge you an ADM and you "negotiated" it away?
If they just let you order one for MSRP, you "just paid the asking price". If they tried to tack on an ADM then that "long relationship" didn't stop them from trying to screw you.

I’d perhaps pay a $5k-$10k mark-up…perhaps!? There’s no F’ing way I’d pay a $50+ mark-up regardless of the car or how wealthy I was. Merely take the business elsewhere…!
Chicagoland dealers’ ADM is now $25,000 for a 450 and up to $50,000 for a 580. This is not just for unsold cars that are about to be shipped but also for new customer orders that may take up to 8 months. I was looking forward to buying a 580, but now will be looking at Lucid instead. Wondering if anyone in other areas is encountering similar markups?

At the time of the deal you always have leverage (unless there is someone standing next to you at the dealership trying to buy the same car). Remember the saying "a bird in the hand ..". To some dealers, a guaranteed MSRP deal now is better than a potential MSRP + ADM later. If they are smart, they should recognize that there are always some dealers across the US that are willing to sale at MSRP or below and all you need is to find one. You have out of state shipping options which you should be able to get a vehicle shipped anywhere from around 1K and then for custom ordered vehicles some dealerships allow drop shipping for a couple of hundred. If I can't find the one willing dealership now, I will just wait for a 2023, 24, .. no hurry.
