Lucid Air named MotorTrend “Car Of The Year!”
This just announced today. Am I missing something, or does some exec at MT own a ton of Lucid stock? Car Of The Year? From a brand new start-up company?

Don't see why it couldn't be deserving of the COTY title. Based on metrics that MT can measure today it's more efficient, handles better, is better styled (IMHO) in a classic 60's American kind of way though the rear trunk hatch line is a little off-putting and the base model is better value proposition and for me better size than the EQS. Is it as luxurious or as quiet? No. Is the ride quality going to be as good? No. Is it as safe? Don't know yet. Will it be as reliable? Don't know yet. Will Lucid be here 5 years from now? Don't know that either but these aren't things that car mags use to evaluate a car.

So don't read or subscribe to Motor Trend then. They gave it to the Tesla Model S in 2013. It was a ground breaking vehicle at the time.
Edit:
It is one reason why I tend to favor Consumer Reports because they tend to have a more wholistic perspective and highly value criteria like safety and reliability than car magazines like Motor Trend.

Point being it isn't like their criteria have changed over the years. For example when has projected reliability, been a MT COTY criteria?

That said, I don't know why they Lucid it this year. The EQS might be more deserving for sure. For me the most exciting new cars right now are the Corvette Z06 and the EQS. The Lucid and the Rivian are also at the top of the list.
One suspicious thing is that MT was the first to get a press test drive - months before any other media source. That makes no sense.

I think its a nice car and I'd definitely want to drive one, I don't think this will be the first or last award for Lucid and I wish them well. After checking out their product yesterday I think they definitely have something great on their hands. For those upset, just remember, MT also crowned the PT Cruiser COTY in 2001, so take that as you will. Both the EQS and S-Class also made it as finalists for COTY so that's also some high praise.

I think the Lucid looks like a great car from what I can tell but my concern is service, parts and repairs. That turned out to be an issue for Tesla as well. Nobody wants their car out of commission for 6-12 months after a fender bender. Still, it's on my short list.

He should go watch Autogefuehl's videos and then learn how to present a balanced review.

The Lucid totally shades the EQS in powertrain/battery tech so I can see why it got the award. It's not about how many they sell or if it's a start up, the Air advances the segment where the EQS is a catch up product.

IMHO, the Lucid is definitely worthy of a car of the year award given all of the superlatives it has. I mean come on, you can fit a whole person into the frunk, where you can’t even open up the hood of the EQS. OK, I’m joking there, but it is quite an amazing car, and definitely has better exterior styling than the EQS, with the same coefficient of drag. The performance is outstanding, as is the range. I have the same concerns as the rest of you with it being a new company, with all of the concomitant concerns of reliability, service, and long-term longevity. There’s a reason the Dream Edition sold out quickly.
