OTA updates

Those of you that have received your vehicle:
Have you gotten any OTA updates yet? Tesla, Lucid, Rivian all are providing updates every couple weeks OTA. Mercedes promised the same on this car, so curious if they are living up to that promise at the moment?

I haven't seen any OTA updates yet.

OTA updates from Mercedes are usually bug fixes (we've had several for the W213), not introducing new features or something like that. In a few cases like the W221 got the 3D navigation view and something else minor. Could change for the the new models like the EQS.

If they want to compete with the newer kids on the block (Rivian, Lucid, Fisker, Tesla, etc) they should really rethink that position.

The marketing materials make it sound like that was the “plan”, but seeing these replies reaffirms my feeling that they won’t do it, at least not yet.

The rear wheel steering angle was one of those . However in the US they just decided to give the 10 angle a "standard" equipment. Maybe we will be surprised by "unlocking" of the headlight system to its full digital potential when its approved for use by the feds.

I have mixed feelings about OTA updates. On one hand it's great if there are bugs, so they can easily fix them, or to purchase additional options such as navigation that might have been skipped initially, especially when buying used, and I like getting regular map updates for the navigation, but on the other hand it gives vendors a free pass to ship incomplete products. Tesla is notoriously shipping betaware and then follows up with updates. Most of their updates are really taking care of things that should have been completed before the car was shipped. Lucid will also ship their cars w/o the driver assistance features and then push them out via an OTA update later. Not sure that's an approach worth copying. While I like my consumer electronics to receive new features over time, I don't really view my car as a computing device. It does everything well from the factory as far as I'm concerned. Yes, map updates to keep the navigation updated makes sense, and I'd like to see maybe updates that add new CarPlay features that require vendor support, but other than that I bought the car to drive and not to fool around with the electronics.

The Mercedes is so advanced that the need for updates is more limited. It is not like the Lucid where it shipped with drivers assistance features missing.

Also the Mercedes has features which are hardware based which could never be delivered by a software update. Like the HUD.

My sense is they will have software updates relating to infotainment. I would also like to see a mobile key feature released as a software update - but I suspect this is beyond mercedes capability.

Option code 896 "smart phone digital key" was an option for our previous 2017 W213 but this option has now disappeared. I'd say Mercedes has the capability but perhaps not seen it needed. As far as I understand, a smart phone as a key would not be equally easy to use as KG. Mercedes Me has a new digital key feature, haven't figured out it but I don't think it would be equal to a mobile key.

Considering OTA updates, I did not count purchased features through the Mercedes Me Shop but I guess they are OTA updates too. Usually these would be "previously known" features, like the rear wheel steering or even high beam assist that I found for some MB models from the shop (when browsing without VIN).

I agree with completely new features being most likely infotainment related.

Mercedes has had digital key support for Android for a while. It uses NFC, and yes doesn't quite offer the same functionality as keyless entry, because you have to hold the phone up to the door handle and then place it in the designated spot to start the engine. Renders the handsfree trunk access useless, because you can't just have the phone in your pocket like you can with the fob.

However, the new Apple CarKey in conjunction with an iPhone 11 or higher supports ultra-wideband (UWB), which is the same technology that the key fob uses, so it works exactly the same way. Just need to have the phone on you and within proximity of the car. Technically, they could add this with an OTA update, because all the hardware needed is the same as for keyless entry. The NFC digital key on the other hand requires an NFC reader in the door handle, which isn't present unless the NFC key option was ordered and as said it's not offered in the USA. So far, though, only BMW supports Apple CarKey. I'm not entirely sure what the new digital key feature in the Mercedes Me app is, but I suspect that's the NFC key. If it's present in the iOS app, then it would be Apple CarKey, because up till now, apps couldn't use the NFC chip in an iPhone outside of some specific use cases such as NFC tags. Apple CarKey changed that.

EQS 450+
I have had two OTA updates on my AMG GLE 53, but none so far on the EQS. On the GLE, they were infotainment tweaks. I did have the software update done at the dealer for my EQS.

An old thread but I just happened to read a reasonably fresh Mercedes document about their latest Star3 architecture. Seems the capability to update the whole MBUX has existed already some time and support for other, non-entertainment units is coming (if not already there). Don't know but perhaps their agreement with cellular service providers does not currently cover such huge amounts of data that on-line MBUX updates would require or perhaps they are still evaluating the reliability of the on-line update services as all MBUX updates have been performed at workshops so far.

Link to that document?

And yes, apparently the architecture introduced with the new S-Class, EQS, etc is a lot different. Apparently you can flash the car using an ethernet cable instead of the proprietary stuff that's been needed before.

Can you clarify the comment, a lot different from which? The quoted text is from this document:

Applies for the current W223 as well as the EQS.

The proprietary diagnosis tool also uses Ethernet, that is DoIP, Diagnosis over IP.

A lot different than the first-gen MBUX architecture.

An interesting article about OTA updates. Use google translator if necessary:
https://jesmb.de/13985/

Bureaucracy seems to be an issue, probably justified in this case though. Release to market of some cars has been significantly delayed in the US because of pending certificates. Also an interesting comment concerning the way Tesla appears to handle related legal requirements: essentially the user is fooled to accept the fact that some features do not have full approval. Obviously does not fulfil the Mercedes safety and liability policy.

Just loaded v12 of the navi maps from my computer to the car on a USB stick because it wasn't showing up as a download in the car. So much for OTA updates.

Maps updates certainly work here. You have to have the car configured for automatic updates (for your region). It may also take quite some time after the OTA update becomes available. This is why I sometimes update even the home region manually.

Map updates have been working fine for me. Those are the only updates I have gotten. I would love if they had other sound modes to choose from.

How do I configure the updates?

I wondered if I could checked on this, so today after lunch,I gave it a try,

Went into systems and stumbled [my usual type of adventure when I'm there, which is rarely] and did find a selection for "Software Updates" Pressing on it brought me the response that there were "No updates available."

From that, my assumption is that my software - '22 EQS450+ delivered to me 10 months ago - is up to date. I don't know how to confirm that without taking the car to the dealer, 70 miles away. But, everything seems to be working alright. I don't use anything except "Hey, Mercedes." and very rarely, Cruise Control.

You should obtain the email address for the technology assistant at your dealer. They are usually part of the service department, not sales. They are more than willing to answer questions and help with user issues.
