Exclamation BUYER BEWARE! HV Battery Failure

I took delivery of a 450+ last Friday. Tonight with 142 miles on the odometer and 50% state of charge, I plugged in my Chargepoint flex level 2 home charger. The system was set to charge to 80%. Plugged it in and it charged at about 9.7/9.8 kwh for about an hour and 15 minutes. At that point, I received a notice on my phone that the charging had failed. When I get in the car it says battery malfunction. Multiple system failures. " car can not be towed" . I have called Mercedes me twice. It has taken them 40 minutes to even begin dispatching a truck and then two hours before arrival. They aren't sure whether there will be a loaner either. Not off to a great start on any front here. Very first charge. Bricked!!

Yikes I am sorry to hear that, I was hoping that since your vehicle is a full electric you won't have battery problems like the 48V on ICE powered vehicles. Please keep us posted and good luck getting it fixed!

Are they able to find a way to tow it despite the car clearly asking not to be towed?

they have to send a flat bed and dollys to pull it out of the garage to flat bed it to the dealer.

I see, when you ask them why it says do not tow, did they answer you?

Two trucks

And now two truck companies have cancelled picking it up. Mercedes has no idea what to do.

because there is no way to put it in neutral. It would completely ruin the car.

I see, still, I am sorry that you have to deal with this. I hope everything works out well and that your dealership responds accordingly to your satisfaction.

I wonder if it is a 12V battery issue? My friend had his fail on his Taycan recently and it has also been an issue for the E-Tron GT and Model S in the past.

UPDATE: Not sure what the issues were but after receiving 12V starter battery critically low messages, etc. I was able to get the entire system to reset at 4 AM. Charging successfully continued until it reached 80%. Called the local dealer to have a look. They suggested it may have just been an initial low charge issue. They said they are backed up. I could drop the car but it would be at least 4 days before they could even look at it. The earliest available service appointment is a month out. I will continue to monitor.

On a positive note, Mercedes Premier support has been very proactive in trying to respond and following up with me.

Glad to hear things got a little bit better. I hate these types of problems - glad they went away…but would like to really know what really happened.

Along those lines…I wonder if the EQS has a “reboot” option - kinda as a last resort to reload/reset everything. On my ICE car…I simply disconnect the 12v battery.

The towing not permitted sign is a misnomer. It means it has to be transported on a an not drag towed. There is a way to put the car in neutral even with a dead car. Its in the manual. Finally the rest method is turn the car off, close the doors wait a few minutes and try again. GUYS always RTFM! I know its long boring and sometimes not well wrtten, but most of the likely scenarios are usually there. Bricked EV happen......

the fact that you presume all of these things weren’t tried is priceless. It’s page 375-378 in the manual in case you are interested. Oh and btw, you probably already know this but according to the manual only a Mercedes’ service tech is allowed to even touch the 12v on this car let alone anything else. How long have you had your EQS?

Ergo it was in the manual..... The way to charge the 12V battery is to turn the car "on" the the main charges the 12v. In your particular case your main was probably low too thus the conundrum. My expectations on the MB service departments to be of help is very low, for the time being they will be dependent on "superuser" type of techs which not many dealers have or that are zoom based from Germany. I wasn't trying to diss you personally but if you have been on car websites for a long time you realize almost no one ever reads the manual.

True, for a vehicle like the EQS, mechanics need to have some software related skills to fix it not long till dealerships need programmers and not mechanics it seems (not saying other MB vehicles don't but the EQS is just way more)

Good guess and likely that was indeed the cause for OP. I would thought those issues would affect the EQS less as there is a huge battery that can charge the 12V unlike the W223 that been sitting on the lot, draining the 12V battery leading to 12V battery critical issues when customers get their vehicle. However, as mentioned by someone else, the 12V battery doesn't seem to get charged without the vehicle turning on first so that is probably why.

2022 Tesla Model S
As a person that has driven exclusively electric for over 5 years, and Tesla for over 4, this is my biggest fear: service issues from brick and mortar dealerships. Earlier this year, my 12 volt battery failed on my Tesla Model X. I live approximately 200 miles from the nearest service center. Tesla will tow it free for 150 miles. So, I was going to have to pick up the balance if I sent it to the service center. But, instead, the next day, a mobile service tech showed up at my house with a new 12 volt battery. It was installed under warranty and the car was good to go. I own one car. I cannot be without a car for 4 days waiting on service and for however long while they do so. When I have had to take it into a Tesla service center, I've always been provided a loaner. That's only occurred three times in four years. And, on those occasions, only once did I have to keep the loaner overnight. People often speak badly of Tesla service. But, I've never seen anything better. The dealership/service model is archaic. I'm staying with Tesla for now. Does anyone want a 580 allocation due to be delivered anytime? If so, private message me.

So when I went to my dealer (which is excellent) to see the EQS580 they had on the showroom floor I ran into my salesman and my service consultant who had brought one of his service customers over to the showroom to see it. I gotta say, they both knew a TON about the car and my service guy was telling me they had been in really extensive trainings about the EQ models and all the top techs were being trained heavily on them. So, that gives me confidence.

BUT, my dealer is excellent. "4 days before we can even look at it" after a failure such as that where the car's drivability is in question is unacceptable.

EQS 450+
The same thing happened to me two days ago for my EQS450+! I had a turtle icon and a warning that said "limited performance" because of some error. When I pulled it off to the side of the road and tried to turn it off and back on it was bricked like OP said.

About an hour later, the car started and I haven't had an issue since. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks for the dealer to look at it.

Also having some glitchy issues with the nav.

atlnguy how did you reset the system at 4 AM? Was there something you did? I'd like to know in case I get bricked again.

Quite honestly. Do not know. After sitting for 7 hours it reset itself and started taking charge again. It hasn’t happened since.

The only minor issue since then has been with ambient lighting. It won’t turn off unless you manually go in and set brightness to 0 or lock the car with the key fob. It’s sporadic too. One time it shuts off with the interior lights. The next it will stay on until one above corrections is applied. The car otherwise has been a great drive so far.

Maybe MB’s EQS launch team were brought over from the X/V167 because their “work” was finished. Following.

Don't know where you are, but this is very strange, and definitely an unacceptable answer from the dealer. Would take about 15 minutes to replace the 12 volt battery, and that is what I would be insisting upon. At my dealer, I doubt I would even have to mention it, as it would have already been done. Find another dealer if you can. As the first EQS purchaser, my dealer has repeatedly contacted me to make sure all is well and there are no problems.
