Apple CarPlay and the auto industry

I find this news very interesting. The new CarPlay version will basically take over many functions in autos including EV’s. Please share your thoughts on this topic.

Being a Techie I never like mixing vendors. It starts a finger pointing war. Auto makers can lock down and chose not to share more than what they currently are with Apple and Google. On the other hand its good to have options. Apple is very good at developing an intuitive User Experience with their products and I'm sure they can help simplify some things in the Auto UX. At the end of the day I will have to get my hands on to decide but in my Son's VW I'd welcome Apple enhancements but in my EQS 580 not so much.

It's an interesting delimma. I have never used Carplay. I preferred the BMW system on my M550, and I prefer MBUX on my wife's GLE and my EQS. However, I watch my son use it on his F150, and it is pretty amazing how it so easily interfaces with his iPhone and does everything he asks through Siri. I'm sure I could grow to like it if I ever began to use it, but I just have not tried it yet. I really don't care what system any of my cars have, as long as they work.

Also mixed feelings and I'm not sure this will be a success. CarPlay already currently has the ability to use additional displays in the car to show turn-by-turn instructions for example in the instrument cluster or the HUD in addition to the central display, however few car manufacturers support it. I think MB has finally added support for it in the latest models. I can totally see this being attractive in some cars, but in my AMG for example I can display performance related information in the instrument cluster that are specific to AMG, which I doubt CarPlay will ever support unless AMG develops their own widgets for CarPlay to display this stuff.

The problem with this kind of integration is often the lowest common denominator. Most normal cars are boring and mainly serve to get from A to B. CarPlay can cover those probably pretty well, but when it comes to more interesting cars like AMGs etc., I don't think I want Apple to be my dashboard.

I also don't actually use CarPlay very much in my car. I much prefer the native MB systems. I do however use it in rental cars, just because I don't wanna bother with having to figure out every Infotainment system, so CarPlay provides a familiar and consistent interface in a car that I don't own and regularly drive. I hear similar arguments from people who own multiple cars from different manufacturers. Instead of having to make the mental switch between the different Infotainment systems, one can just use CarPlay in all cars and have the same familiar UX. I think for that this is a great idea.

The full scope of this is more valuable for high volume brands and brands which lack the scale and margins for custom infotainment.

if you look at the infotainment system in a KIA, Ford, Toyota or Chevy those brands would benefit from using an Apple interface. Some mass market brands are already doing this adopting Android Auto as their OS. Volvo isn’t mass market, but they are sub scale and they have also adopted Android Auto instead of building their own OS.

Personally, I use CarPly quite a bit especially for playing Apple Music and occasionally for navigation. I like it but as you can tell by my name here, I’m biased toward Apple devices. I love their simplicity and quality.

Unless it's fully built into the car and not the phone, but still updated directly by apple, I am not certain I would risk letting CarPlay be in charge of my car's UX. Too many disconnects when it's just in charge of maps and entertainment.
