The problem with this kind of integration is often the lowest common denominator. Most normal cars are boring and mainly serve to get from A to B. CarPlay can cover those probably pretty well, but when it comes to more interesting cars like AMGs etc., I don't think I want Apple to be my dashboard.
I also don't actually use CarPlay very much in my car. I much prefer the native MB systems. I do however use it in rental cars, just because I don't wanna bother with having to figure out every Infotainment system, so CarPlay provides a familiar and consistent interface in a car that I don't own and regularly drive. I hear similar arguments from people who own multiple cars from different manufacturers. Instead of having to make the mental switch between the different Infotainment systems, one can just use CarPlay in all cars and have the same familiar UX. I think for that this is a great idea.
if you look at the infotainment system in a KIA, Ford, Toyota or Chevy those brands would benefit from using an Apple interface. Some mass market brands are already doing this adopting Android Auto as their OS. Volvo isn’t mass market, but they are sub scale and they have also adopted Android Auto instead of building their own OS.
